FORT MYERS, Fla. – After an impressive 191 point jump in the GolfStat.com rankings along with a second-place finish at the ASUN Championship, the FGCU men's golf team earned several individual accolades from the league on Wednesday. Head coach Andrew Danna became the program's first-ever Coach of the Year selection, while senior Van Holmgren (Plymouth, Minn./Waysata HS/North Dakota State) earned unanimous First Team honors becoming just the second Eagle to do so.
Joining Danna and Holmgren, sophomore Frankie Capan III (North Oaks, Minn./Northwest Christian HS/Alabama) was selected to the All-ASUN Second Team, while Austin Cherichella (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona HS) was named to the All-Freshman Team.
"I'm really proud and excited to see Van, Frankie and Austin honored today – this is a testament to their hard work and dedication. Even though they are being honored individually, this is a great honor for our entire program," said Danna. "For myself, I'm humbled and honored to be named coach of the year, but again, it's really a reflection of the hard work of our team, our administrative support, and those who assist our program on a daily basis. Our conference is full of great coaches who are among the best in the country and that's what makes this special. Finally, I'm proud of all the ASUN student-athletes for how they composed themselves during a really challenging year coming off last spring."
Holmgren became just the second FGCU men's golfer to be named to the first team joining Daniel Mazziotta who did so in 2011. The senior won the ASUN Championship after shooting 204 (69-68-67) becoming the first FGCU player to do so. With that, he also became the fourth player in FGCU history to qualify for the NCAA Regionals. Holmgren led FGCU with a 71.67 scoring average, fourth-best for a single-season in program history, through eight tournaments and 24 rounds. He is currently ranked No. 120 by GolfStat.com for individual players including a 9-6 record vs Top-50 players highlighted by three wins over Top-25 players.
Capan tied for seventh at the ASUN Championship after shooting 210 (72-68-70) which was his best 54-hole score of the season. He ranked second on the team with a 72.43 scoring average through seven tournaments and had 12 rounds at par-or-better including five rounds in the 60s. Capan's top individual finish of the year was tied for fourth at the Old Corkscrew Intercollegiate where he shot 212 (72-72-68).
Cherichella became the 10th Eagle since 2008 to be named to the All-Freshman Team. He tied for 19th at the ASUN Championship shooting 221 (73-74-74) and ranked fourth on the team in scoring average (72.78). Cherichella had six rounds at par-or-better and four rounds in the 60s as well as two second-place tournament finishes on the year. The rookie also tied the school record for a low round after shooting 64 in the third round at the Old Corkscrew Intercollegiate.
Danna earns Coach of the Year honors in just his second year as head coach at FGCU. On top of the 188-point ranking improvement, Danna led the Eagles to five top-four finishes this spring highlighted by winning the Old Corkscrew Intercollegiate and the second-place finish at the ASUN Championship Tournament. Prior to FGCU, he served as an assistant at LSU in 2018-19 after having a successful six-year tenure at Lynn University where he led the Fighting Knights to the 2018 NCAA Division II National Championship and was the David Williams National Coach of the Year.

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 85 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 13+ seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just nine seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 40 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Eight FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport - including women's basketball (No. 21, 2020-21), beach volleyball (No. 20, 2021) and both men's soccer (2018, 2019) and women's soccer (2018) as three of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.50 GPA in the classroom in the fall 2020 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 23 consecutive semesters. The 2019 Fall, 2020 Spring, and 2020 Fall semesters each saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 - being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
