Four children suspected of being involved in a carjacking last week in San Leandro were arrested, and two of them were involved in the attempted robbery of a person at a bank and a separate carjacking earlier this month, police said.

Police arrested the four in Oakland after they responded to a carjacking in the 200 block of Begier Avenue on Friday, police said. Two of the young people who were arrested are 14 years old, and the other two are 12 and 11, respectively, police said.

Nobody was injured in any of the incidents, police said.

According to police, the first crime happened on April 9 at the Chase Bank in the 1300 block of Fairmont Drive in San Leandro. Police said three juveniles approached a man at an ATM machine, pointed a gun at him and demanded money.

The man claimed to be an off-duty police officer, even though he wasn’t, and the three teens ran away into a smaller white SUV, police said. They did not take any of the man’s money.

About six hours later, another person arrived to his home in the 300 block of Pershing Drive, when two juveniles approached with a gun and tried to take his car. This time, the victim body-slammed one of the suspects, disarming the weapon, police said. Both suspects than ran into a white SUV.

“Although we do not encourage individuals to resist an armed encounter, we are thankful that in both cases, the victim’s acted quickly to prevent them from being injured and having their belongings stolen,” San Leandro police spokesman Lt. Ali Khan said in a statement.

Surveillance video revealed that the SUV, a white Kia Niro, was the same one used to flee both crimes, police said.

On April 13, Oakland police pulled over the Kia Niro with three youngsters inside who police said were involved in a robbery. All three were released to their guardians.

Three days later came the carjacking on Begier Avenue, and the arrest of the four, police said.

The cases will be handled by the Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center.
