HK Softball Stays Undefeated with Four Wins; Bruder and Lewis Set School Records - Zip06.com

Softball

The Haddam-Killingworth softball team continued its stellar start to the season by notching four more victories last week. The Cougars are now 7-0 on the year.

On April 19, H-K hosted East Hampton and posted a 10-0 shutout. Sophomore Kaleigh Bodak had 11 strikeouts in six innings on the mound. Senior Ella McGlynn had two hits with two runs scored and an RBI for the Cougars.

The following day, H-K faced Valley Regional and claimed a 16-3 victory. Freshman Bella Richwine hit for the cycle by getting a single, a double, a triple, and a home run in the win. Richwine scored four runs to go with two RBI and also pitched six innings to earn the win in the circle.

Freshman Cheyenne LaTouche had three hits, including a home run, to go with four RBI and four runs scored for H-K. Fellow freshman Ivy McNeil had three hits, including a homer, with four RBI.

On April 22, the Cougars defeated Old Lyme by the final of 7-1. Richwine went 3-for-4 with four RBI, while McNiel also went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs. Bodak also had an RBI the Cougars.

H-K finished its week by blanking Hale-Ray 5-0 on April 23. Junior Madison LaTouche went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Freshmen Keira Czarkowski and Cheyenne LaTouche drove home the other runs for H-K.

Baseball

The H-K baseball team claimed victory in all three of its games last week to improve to 6-1 on the season.

On April 19, H-K traveled to East Hampton and prevailed by a 16-6 score. Senior Alden Halfinger had three hits and two RBI, while junior Nick Glynn had two doubles with three RBI for the Cougars.

Three days later, H-K hosted Old Lyme and won an 8-5 decision. Halfinger pitched 5.1 innings of scoreless relief and struck out nine batters in the victory. Senior Alec Erskine had two hits, scored three runs, and stole two bases.

In H-K’s final game the week, the Cougars earned a 7-1 win versus Hale-Ray on April 23. Erskine picked up the win on the mound after striking out 14 and walking just one batter in the win. Seniors Matt Pray and Matt Miranda both had one hit with an RBI, as did junior Lucas Kamoen.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The H-K boys’ outdoor track competed against Westbrook on April 20 and won the meet unanimously due to Westbrook’s small numbers.

Senior John Bruder broke the school record in the shot put with a toss of 52 feet-10 inches in the victory. Bruder broke a record that dated all the way back to 1979, which was the year of the first graduating class at H-K.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The H-K girls’ outdoor track team earned a victory versus Westbrook on April 20, winning the meet unanimously since the Knights were not able to field a large enough squad.

Senior Kedarjah Lewis established a new school record in the long jump at the meet. Lewis recorded a leap of 18 feet-2 inches to set the school record in the long jump.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The H-K boys’ lacrosse team improved to 3-0 with recent victories versus North Branford and Old Saybrook.

The Cougars recorded a 6-5 road win over North Branford on April 20. Two days later, H-K faced Old Saybrook on the road and defeated the Rams by the final score of 14-2.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The H-K girls’ lacrosse team took three losses last week and is now 0-4 this spring.

The Cougars opened the week against Mercy on April 19 and took a 19-11 defeat. H-K went on to take a 16-12 loss against North Branford on April 20 and a 17-13 defeat versus Old Saybrook on April 22.

Boys’ Tennis

The H-K boys’ tennis team had a nice week the saw the Cougars win three of their four matchups. With these results, H-K improved its record to 3-4 on the year.

On April 19, the Cougars took a 7-0 loss to Valley Regional. The next day, the team rebounded with a 6-0 win over Coginchaug.

Freshman Eddie White earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory for H-K, while senior Charles Martino claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win in singles action versus Coginchaug. Junior Sean Mercier won a 6-2, 6-2 decision; junior Henry Altman posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory; and junior John Guarino won by forfeit. The doubles team of junior Joseph Mercier and freshman Luke Hedges also won by forfeit.

H-K went on to defeat Old Saybrook by a 4-3 score on April 21. Two days later, the Cougars recorded a 4-3 victory versus Morgan.

Girls’ Tennis

The H-K girls’ tennis team stands at 3-4 after losing two of its three matches last week.

On April 19, the Cougars hosted Valley Regional and took a 6-1 defeat. Then on April 22, H-K dropped a 4-3 decision against Old Saybrook in another home match. The following day, H-K was on the road to face Morgan and claimed a 4-3 victory.

Boys’ Golf

The H-K boys’ golf team took two losses during the first week of its season.

On April 19, the Cougars hosted Hale-Ray at Black Birch Golf Course and lost by one stroke, 209-210. Junior Andrew Fleig carded the best score for the Cougars with a 46. Also competing for H-K were junior Gabe Barile (51), senior Nick Pach (56), and freshman Declan Kessler (57).

Three days later, H-K traveled to Fenwick Golf Course and lost to Old Saybrook by the score of 194-226. Fleig had the top score for H-K with a 51, followed by Barile (52) and Kessler (59).
