Four masterworks by French artists including Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, and Claude Monet from a private collection will highlight Sotheby’s impressionist and modern art evening sale on May 12 in New York, the auction house announced Tuesday.

Leading the group is Cézanne’s Nature morte: pommes et poires, the artist’s last still life of this caliber remaining in private hands. Fresh to the market since it was acquired in 2003 for US$8.7 million, the painting is expected to sell for between US$25 million and US$35 million.

The group also includes Degas’s singular ballerinas, Danseuse, with a presale estimate of between US$10 million and US$15 million; two canvases by Monet: La Seine à Lavacourt, Débâcle and Fleurs dans un pot (Roses et brouillard), estimated to sell for between US$4 million and US$6 million each.

The pieces all have a rich provenance. According to Sotheby’s, Danseuse was once in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston for nearly 70 years. La Seine à Lavacourt, Débâcle was formerly in the collection of George Vanderbilt II and once hung at the Biltmore Estate, while Fleurs dans un pot (Roses et brouillard) was formerly in the collection of James F. Sutton, founder of the American Art Association, and Ogden Phipps, a stockbroker, court tennis champion, and an art collector.

These images embody the very best of French art in the late 19th century, says Scott Niichel, co-head of Sotheby’s impressionist and modern art department in New York, with “each—and particularly Cézanne’s superlative still life—building a critical bridge to the later artistic movements that would define Modernism and transform art history as we know it.”

This sale will follow Sotheby’s dedicated auction of the personal art collection of Anne Marion (1938-2020), a Texas oil heiress, rancher, and art patron. With more than 200 objects, the Marion collection is estimated to fetch at least US$150 million.

The four works will be on exhibition at Hong Kong Convention Center from April 16-21, and on view, by appointment only, at Sotheby’s New York galleries beginning May 1.
