The Big Ten Conference will have four schools participating in the 2021 NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Tournament, the NCAA announced Sunday evening during a live selection show broadcast on ESPNU. Johns Hopkins, Maryland, Northwestern and Rutgers will represent the conference in the tournament, which will begin on Friday, May 14, and conclude with the national championship on Sunday, May 30, at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, Md.After capturing both the Big Ten Conference title and winning the Big Ten Tournament with a perfect 13-0 record, Northwestern was awarded the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament and earned a first-round bye. Northwestern will be making its 17th consecutive tournament appearance and will look to capture the eighth national championship in program history. The Wildcats, who boast the highest-scoring offense in the NCAA (20.62 gpg), will begin tournament play at home on Sunday, May 16, against the winner of a first-round matchup between Stanford and Denver, which will also be played in Evanston. Johns Hopkins earned an at-large bid and will face James Madison in the first round in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Friday, May 14. The Blue Jays will be making their third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and have now earned berths in six of the last seven tournaments. The defending national champion Maryland Terrapins will begin their title defense with a first-round contest against High Point on Friday, May 14, in Durham, N.C. Maryland has won four of the last six NCAA Tournaments and the program’s 14 national titles are the third-most by any women’s athletic program in NCAA history. The Terrapins are 1-0 against the Panthers in NCAA Tournament play, with their lone matchup coming in 2017 during Maryland’s 23-0 national championship season. The winner of the Maryland and High Point tilt will advance to play either No. 7 Duke or Mount St. Mary’s. [MARYLAND RELEASE]
Rutgers earned its first berth into the NCAA Tournament since 1999 and will look to capture the program’s first tournament win when they take on Drexel on Friday, May 14, in Stony Brook, N.Y. Rutgers received an at-large bid into the tournament following a 6-8 season that saw the Scarlet Knights set a school record with six Big Ten Conference wins, including the program’s first-ever victories over Johns Hopkins, Maryland and Penn State. The winner of the Rutgers and Drexel game will face the winner of No. 8 Stony Brook and Towson. [RUTGERS RELEASE]
The first and second rounds of the tournament will be played on the campuses of eight of the competing institutions on May 14 and May 16, while the quarterfinal contests are scheduled for Saturday, May 22 and Sunday, May 23.
The semifinals will take place on Friday, May 28, and the national championship will be played on Sunday, May 30. Both the semifinals and the national championship game will be played at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, Md., and broadcast live on ESPNU.
