The four-month-old baby boy injured during a police chase in South Mississippi on Monday has died.
This morning, Biloxi police released a statement saying ‘despite the efforts of medical staff, the child passed away as a result of the injuries sustained.’
The four-month-old has been identified as La’Mello Parker.
Around 11:30 Monday morning, deputies with the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana responded to the scene of a double murder in the city of Barker, which marked the beginning of a hunt that eventually ended on Interstate 10 in Harrison County.
Officials say 30-year-old Eric Smith entered his ex-girlfriend’s home, Christin Parker, and fatally shot her and her nephew, Brandon Parker.
Smith then fled in his Nissan Altima with his four-month-old child just before 3 p.m., traveling east on I-10 toward Gulfport.
The chase eventually came to an end near the Woolmarket exit when Smith drove into the grass median and was stuck.
Gunfire was exchanged and Smith was shot and killed at the scene.
Here is reaction from the community today. Russ Naron posted to the WXXV Facebook page: “Let’s be very clear, the father was solely responsible for this tragedy. He murdered two people, kidnapped a child, endangered the child, and the public safety of others with a motor vehicle, resisted arrest, and because of his inexcusable behavior caused the death of an innocent child.”
However, not everyone felt the same way. In Gulfport, Robyn Phillips had this to say. “Police departments use a heavy hand now a days. They don’t take into consideration the bystanders, the innocent people. All they want to do is make a quota or something. There’s just no more care for human life.”
According to Biloxi police, once a thorough investigation is complete, the details will be released to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
The baby’s autopsy will be done tomorrow for the cause of death.
