Michigan State Baseball: Four Spartans receive All-Big Ten honors - The Only Colors

With the Big Ten baseball season drawing to a close on Sunday, May 30, the Big Ten office has released the official end-of-year All-Big Ten honors. In total, four members of the Michigan State University baseball team made the list for the 2021 season.

Spartan sophomore right fielder Zaid Walker was named as a member of the All-Big Ten Third Team. Freshman short stop Jebb Mitch and freshman pitcher Nick Powers were named to the All-Freshman Team. Senior designated hitter Andrew Morrow was the Spartan recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.

Zaid Walker, who hails from Homewood, Ill., was the Spartans’ most consistent offensive weapon. Entering the season finale against Iowa, Walker leads the Spartans in batting average (.305), hits (50), RBI (31), runs scored (29), and total bases (69). He is one of only two Spartans to have started all 43 games and he is second on the team in stolen bases with seven.

Walker also managed eight doubles, a triple, and three home runs on the season. He is no slouch on defense either, having accumulated 77 putouts and four assists from right field. Walker also received a Big Ten Player of the Week Honor on March 10, and was a 2019 member of the All-Freshman Team.

Mitch Jebb is a native of Saginaw, Mich., and was the Spartans’ primary short stop with 42 starts at that position. On defense, Jebb made 62 putouts and led the Spartans with 121 assists to date. He was also a part of 33 of MSU’s Big Ten leading 41 double plays.

As a batter, Jebb boasts a batting average of .269 and co-leads the team with two triples. Jebb also ranks second on the team in hits (43) and doubles (9), and he has the second longest hitting streak with the Spartans at eight games. He also accounted for 15 RBI, 56 bases, 24 runs scored, and four stolen bases.

Nick Powers, a southpaw who hails from Flushing, Mich., was leading the Spartans with four wins and had a record of 4-3 with 35 strikeouts and an ERA of 4.87 in 44.1 innings of work through May 1. But, a season-ending injury at Penn State cut his debut season short.

Powers also was a recipient of the Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week honor on March 30, thanks to his shutout performance through 6.2 innings against the Indiana Hoosiers, who were in first place in the Big Ten standings at the time. Powers also earned a win over the Michigan Wolverines on March 22.

Andrew Morrow is a native of Omaha, Neb. and had appeared in 16 total games this year as a designated hitter. Morrow leads the Spartans in slugging percentage at .541 and is second with a batting average of .297, including three doubles and two home runs.

Morrow also received his second Academic All-Big Ten honor this year. He graduated in 2020 with his degree in interdisciplinary studies in social sciences, and Morrow is currently working on his master’s degree in sport coaching and leadership.
