Pac-12 Commissioner and Oregon president sound off in exclusive interview - OregonLive

The Pac-12 Conference announced the hire of new commissioner George Kliavkoff on Thursday. The new commissioner and University of Oregon president Michael Schill joined me on the statewide radio show for a 1-on-2 interview.

Listen to the full interview with Kliavkoff and Schill here.

It was a wide-ranging interview on a variety of topics that are relevant to the Pac-12 Conference. The commissioner (Kliavkoff) and the head of the Pac-12′s CEO Group (Schill) talked candidly about the future of the confernce.

Kliavkoff on unifying the conference and bringing the athletic directors closer:

“I’m going to learn and I’m going to be open. Every job I’ve had has been successful because of the relationships I’ve built. It’s my intention to build deep, real relationships with the athletic directors and coaches and to listen to the academic advisors, the presidents and the athletes.”

Kliavkoff on why he’d leave MGM for the Pac-12:

“In this job there’s a mission that has a broader social implication. I truly believe that if we do our job well at the conference level that it will create a revenue stream for the schools to be used for scholarships and other academic pursuits that will change the lives of men and women. For me, that’s why I left.”

Schill on the headquarters of the conference in San Francisco:

“We’re certainly not married to San Francisco... once George gets his sea legs he will assess what location is the best location and I’m sure he’ll bring that recommendation to the presidents and chancellors. I think none of us are wedded to San Francisco.”

Kliavkoff on the downtown SF location of headquarters:

“Specifically we’re not wedded to the current lease and the payment obligations to it. Even if we stay in San Francisco it will be less expensive space.”

It was a great conversation with a lot of tentacles. Kliavkoff talked about being a college rower, his family, and his first real job. Schill spoke about the hiring process, what he saw in the hire, and what challenges are on the near horizon for the Pac-12. Well worth your time.
