Redbirds Trail Four Times, Advance to Double-Elimination Bracket with Thrilling 12th-Inning Victory in MVC Tournament - Illinois State University Athletics - Illinois State Athletics

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Illinois State baseball team trailed after the top on an inning four times in Tuesday's MVC Tournament play-in game against Evansville. The Redbirds tied, or in the case of the 12th inning, took the lead on all four occasions en route to a 10-9 victory over the Purples Aces at Itchy Jones Stadium. 

Fifth-year junior Jeremy Gaines provided a bases-loaded single for the walk-off winner for the sixth-seeded Redbirds (23-32 overall, 12-15 MVC), which will face second-seeded Indiana State at 2:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday in the tournament's double elimination bracket. 

Fourth-year sophomore Jake McCaw reached base five times while fifth-year senior Jordan Libmanfifth-year junior Aidan Huggins, fourth-year junior Tyson Hayssecond-year freshman Ryan Cermak all hit home runs. 

Purple Aces' season ends at 28-27 overall and 11-16 in the MVC after outhitting Illinois State, 17-13. 

HOW IT HAPPENED  

UE hit a three-run homer in the 1st inning, but Huggins and Hays responded with virtually identical, deep blasts down the left field line to tie it at 3-3. 

Libman hit a three-run shot in the 2nd inning before Evansville tied the game in the 5th inning and ultimately led, 7-6, after seven and a half innings. 

Huggins reached on an infield single to tie it at 7-7 after seven innings. 

Evansville struck first in the 10th inning but double off the wall in left-center by fourth-year junior Kyle Soberano tied the game at 8-8 through 10 innings. 

UE scored a run in the 12th prior to Cermak blasting a home run to left-center to tie the game once more. After two walks and a hitter batter, Gaines delivered a single up the middle to plate the winning run. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 

  • This was the longest game for ISU since 4/9/2019, when Joe Aeilts hit a walk-off double to top Illinois, 7-6, in the 13th inning. 
  • McCaw has 40 hits in his last 81 at-bats. 
  • Three runs is ISU's biggest comeback win of the season

Illinois State is scheduled to face second-seeded Indiana State at 2:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday. The game is on ESPN+
