Matt Centrowitz shows promising fitness heading into the Trials

On Saturday, the 2016 Olympic champion executed a perfectly timed kick on the last lap, blowing past the competition on the homestretch to win the 1500 meters in 3:35.26. It was Centrowitz’s fastest 1500-meter race since placing eighth in the final at the 2019 IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar.

The Bowerman Track Club runner has shown an upward trajectory this season, previously running a 1:50 eighth-place finish in the 800 meters at the Miramar Invitational and a 3:40 win in the 1500 meters at the Sound Running Invitational. With this latest performance, he made a clear statement to his competitors vying for a spot on the Olympic team in five weeks.

British runners Jake Heyward finished second and Marc Scott finished third in 3:36.24 and 3:36.28, respectively. The next closest American to Centrowitz was training partner Grant Fisher who finished fourth in 3:36.52.

Trayvon Bromell clocks sub-10 once again

Bromell broke 10 seconds for the second time this season, winning the men’s 100 meters in 9.92 and finishing well ahead of runner-up Chris Royster who crossed the line in 10.22.. The world championship bronze medalist has been recovering from injuries for the past couple of years, but he solidified his return to the top of the sport with this run, the third fastest time in the world this year.

Sifan Hassan throws down a 14:35 in the 5,000

From the gun, Hassan didn’t bother to utilize the pacesetting Emma Coburn did for the rest of the field. She bolted to the front by herself, putting more than 50 meters on the chase pack by the first 800 meters. Still maintaining a massive lead, Hassan reached the first 3,000 meters in 8:46 and held her position through the finish line, placing first in 14:35.

The Dutch runner’s first outdoor race of the season showed off her impressive fitness heading into the Olympic Games this summer. After winning the unprecedented 1500/10,000-meter double at the 2019 IAAF World Championships, she’ll have a highly anticipated performance in Tokyo.

In the battle for second, Josette Norris finished in 14:51, a 28-second improvement on her personal best. Rachel Schneider finished third in 14:52 and Emily Sisson closed for fourth place in 14:53. Of the top finishers, nine women ran under the 15:10 Olympic qualifying standard. BYU’s Whittni Orton, the lone collegian in the race, finished 10th in 15:12, shattering the previous school record and setting the fastest NCAA time so far this season.

Laura Muir dominates the women’s 800 meters

Great Britain’s star middle-distance runner almost broke her personal best in the fastest heat of the women’s 800 meters, crossing the finish line first in 1:58.71, agonizingly close to her 1:58.42 PR from 2019. Just before the 600-meter mark, Muir made a move that none of her competitors were able to match, and by the homestretch, she was running solo.

Behind Muir, Allie Wilson of the Atlanta Track Club continued her successful season with a runner-up finish in 1:59.68, breaking the two-minute barrier for the first time. Adelle Tracy of Great Britain finished third in 1:59.84. And American mile record-holder Elle Purrier secured a significant personal best by finishing fifth in 1:59.99.

Katie Snowden wins a homestretch battle in the 1500

Snowden, who runs for Great Britain, took down a women’s 1500-meter field that included Olympic medalists, world championship finalists, and NCAA champions, winning in a personal best time of 4:02.98. In the final meters, she tapped into a higher gear to beat 2016 Olympian Kate Grace to the line. Grace crossed in 4:03.54, and Jessica Hull followed for third in 4:04.16. All three dipped under the 4:04.20 Olympic standard in the event.

Steeplechase world champion Emma Coburn ran very close to her personal best by finishing fourth in 4:04.28. And Melissa Bishop-Nriagu—world silver medalist at 800 meters—improved on her personal best by almost five seconds when she finished fifth in 4:04.42.

Omar McLeod opens his outdoor season with a win

In his first 110-meter hurdle race of the season, the 2016 Olympic champion from Jamaica walked away with a victory, running 13.11. The field included world record-holder Aries Merritt—who is making his return to competition after recovering from a kidney transplant—and Olympic finalist Devon Allen, who finished second in 13.26.

Andrea Seccafien runs a huge PR to break the Canadian record, and leads three under Olympic standard in women’s 10,000

After running a personal best of 31:45 in January, Seccafien had another breakthrough run in the 10,000 meters on Friday night, crossing the line in 31:13 to break the Canadian national record and take 32 seconds off her previous personal best. She controlled the pace early on Friday night, before breaking away from the lead pack with 800 meters remaining and cruising into the finish line solo.

Also running massive personal bests, Ednah Kurgat and Sara Hall finished second and third in 31:21.65 and 31:21.90, respectively, both getting well under the 31:25 Olympic standard. Makena Morley, Amy-Eloise Markovc, and Jessica Judd barely missed the Olympic qualifying mark; Morley finished fourth in 31:25.19, Markovc placed fifth in 31:25.91, and Judd came through the finish in 31:25.98.

Zouhair Talbi breaks through in men’s 10,000

Among a stacked field, a surprise winner emerged in the fastest heat of the men’s 10,000 meters. In the last lap, Talbi used an impressive kick to beat Hillary Bor and Joe Klecker after the trio led the charge up front for a large portion of the race. Talbi, a three-time NAIA champion for Oklahoma City, finished in 27:20.61. Bor followed in 27:22.80 and Klecker placed third in 27:23.44. All three athletes ran well under the 27:28 Olympic qualifying standard.

Before Friday night, Talbi’s 10,000-meter personal best was 28:02 from 2019. So far this season, the athlete from Morocco has set two personal bests. He ran 13:28 for 5,000 meters at the Trials of Miles Kansas City Qualifier on May 1, three weeks after winning the individual title at the NAIA Cross-Country Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
