What sounds do you find soothing?
Students in U.S. high schools can get free digital access to The New York Times until Sept. 1, 2021.
After 17 years spent underground, billions of Brood X cicadas are set to return this spring. When they emerge, the insects, which are able to register one of the longest beats in the animal world, will create a grand wash of sound.
David Rothenberg, a professor of philosophy and music, intends to go out to the fields and make music in synchronicity with the cicadas.
Is the hum of insects a pleasant sound to you? Are there any noises found in nature that you find calming or entrancing? What sounds do you find soothing? What sounds annoy you?
Tell us in the comments, then read the related article to learn more about Dr. Rothenberg’s unique concert.
