Asheboro, N.C. — Asheboro was able to finish the regular season sweep of Southwestern Randolph on Friday evening.
The Blue Comets were 11-2 victors at McCrary Park behind four innings with crooked numbers on the scoreboard. Asheboro High School shares the diamond with Asheboro Copperheads (Coastal Plain League), but Southwestern Randolph‘s baseball field was in poor shape with recent storms and the teams compromised on the scheduled date.
Earlier in the week, Asheboro sent five runs across home plate during the bottom of the seventh to upend Southwestern Randolph by a 10-9 final tally. Freshman Camden Walker received a five-pitch walk as the bases were loaded up and that brought home the winning run.
The Blue Comets got on the scoreboard in the top of the first frame when senior Avery Jones ripped an two-RBI single to center field. Jones’ base knock was able to plate both Tanner Marsh (reached on E5) and Davis Gore (hit by pitch) — 2-0 Asheboro in front with two outs.
Southwestern Randolph cut the deficit in half with an RBI single out to left field for sophomore Tyler Parks, which scored Bryson Reid (single to right field) from the third.
In the top of the second, Asheboro spotted four runs to go ahead 5-1. Tanner Marsh lifted a sacrifice fly towards right field, Alex Martinez came around due to a throwing error, and Gage Miller (NC State University recruit) smacked a two-out RBI double into left field.
Jones hit a line-drive RBI single to right field during the top part of the fourth, which allowed Miller (seven-pitch free pass) to touch home plate all the way from second base — 6-1 Blue Comets advantage.
Asheboro added two more runs to its total during the top of the fifth frame. Senior Tatum Marsh (walked) was brought in due to a fielding error at second base, then freshman Connor Adams lifted a sac fly into center and that put Asheboro up 8-1.
When the bottom of the sixth rolled around, Southwestern Randolph snapped its multi-inning drought with a run. Senior Bryson Hogan deposited an RBI single to left field to score Adam Cole (double into center field). SWR did trail 8-2 at this point.
The Blue Comets were not finished delivering at the dish. Asheboro got an RBI double into left field from Walker, then two additional runs on a fielding error by the Cougars’ second baseman after Jones hit a routine ground ball there.
Asheboro has won nine-straight games and its last defeat came against Southern Alamance by one run — 10-9. Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference victories against Southern Alamance (once), Eastern Guilford (twice), Southern Guilford (twice), Williams (twice), and Southwestern Randolph (twice).
Jones pitched five innings on the bump for Asheboro with six hits, one run, four walks, and four strikeouts to complete his statistics. The Blue Comets handed the baseball to Gore and Adams for the sixth and seventh frames — together worked two innings, two hits, one run (not earned), four walks, and capped off the evening with two punch outs.
Southwestern Randolph started Parks on Friday evening. The sophomore pitcher went four innings with just one strikeout, while giving up five hits, six runs (four earned) and five walks. Noah Cagle tossed three innings with six hits, five runs (one earned), two walks, and two strikeouts notched by the senior.
Asheboro (10-2) has reached the end of conference play, but will face Randleman and Chatham Central next week to conclude the regular season. The Blue Comets are 10-2 in the seven-team league with blemishes against Southeast Guilford (8-6) and Southern Alamance (10-9).
Southwestern Randolph (9-3) will be back in action on Monday and Thursday when it squares off with Southeast Guilford. The Falcons are now 9-1 in MPC competition with their lone loss coming to Asheboro (14-8).
