Irvine, Calif. – Four CSU Bakersfield baseball players earned All-League recognition Wednesday, capping the conclusion of a successful and historic inaugural season for the Roadrunners in the Big West Conference. Tyler Jorgensen was named First-Team All-League, and Evan Berkey garnered Second-Team honors, while Aaron Charles and Jacen Roberson were awarded with Honorable Mention accolades.
A fifth-year senior from Gilbert, Ariz., Jorgensen finished fifth in the conference with a .363 batting average, and ranked third with 1.44 hits per game, this season. He led the `Runners with 62 hits and 35 RBI in 2021, while collecting 18 multi-hit performances and reaching base at least once in 37 of 43 games.
Jorgensen posted a pair of hitting streaks longer than 12 games, and at one point reached in 28-consecutive contests. He added eight doubles and a career-best four home runs this season, finishing the year with a .390 on-base percentage and a .480 slugging-percentage.
He closes his Bakersfield career with a .338 average, good for third-best in program history.
"Jorgy had a great run here at CSUB," said Head Coach Jeremy Beard. "Capping it off with a First-Team All-Big West selection is a fitting and well-deserved way to wrap up an exceptional career."
Berkey enjoyed a career season in nearly all offensive categories, finishing among the league leaders in all three slash categories, with a .324 average, a .500 slugging percentage and team-best marks in on-base percentage (.427) and OPS (.927).
The La Quinta, Calif., native added nine doubles, a pair of triples and four home runs, while reaching base 27 times via base on balls or hit by pitch and stealing six bags.
Berkey made just three errors in 86 chances for a .965 fielding-percentage while playing all over the field for the `Runners, proving to be an excellent defender at both the infield and outfield positions this season.
"Evan has worked hard on his game, and it paid off this season," Beard noted. "He does so many things well on a baseball field and this is a nice honor for him."
Bakersfield native, Aaron Charles was a mainstay in the CSUB rotation this season, throwing a career high 47.1 innings while making nine starts and pitching to a 3.80 earned run average.
Charles limited opposing hitters to a .284 average against and posted a 2-3 record with one save in 2021. His struck out 30 while walking just 13.
"AC has made great strides as a player, student and in life the past few seasons," Beard said. "Earning All-Conference post-season recognition is a fitting result for his journey."
Roberson led the `Runners and finished ninth in the conference with his .542 slugging percentage, that included team-highs of 10 doubles, three triples and seven home runs. His home run total was the fifth-highest single-season total in CSUB history and the most by a `Runner since 2012.
A Bakersfield native, Roberson drove in 34 runs this season, scored 30 times and stole four bags, finishing third on the team with a .282 batting average.
"Roby had a solid year for us and probably deserved higher accolades for his efforts," Beard explained. "He has a huge presence on both sides of the ball and when he was in the line-up, we won a lot of games."
Picked to finish last before the season began, the Roadrunners were the surprise of the Big West season, spending much of the season alone in third place and winning 20 games: 17 in conference action.
As many as 32 letterwinners from the 2021 season are eligible to return in the fall.
