YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University Head Gymnastics Coach Katie Minasola announced the additions of Gianna Antonio (Novi, Mich.-South Lyon East), Cassie Bergin (Islip Terrace, N.Y.-East Islip), Alana Fisher (Athens, Ala.-Alabama Connections Academy), and Emma Lewis (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) to the 2022 roster. The four newcomers join Jade Blankenship (Holly Springs, N.C.-Crossroads Flex) and Ella Chemotti (Canton, Mich.-Canton), who previously signed to round out the freshmen class.
"I am very excited to announce additions that round out our 2022 freshmen class", said Minasola. "Gianna Antonio, Cassie Bergin, Alana Fisher, and Emma Lewis will not only add value to our team in the gym, but also to our team culture. Each one of these young ladies will bring something special to add to the momentum we have already established. I am looking forward to this upcoming season with the addition of our entire freshman class."
Joining the Eagles from Gym America in Ann Arbor, Mich., Antonio was coached by Claudia Kretschmer. The incoming freshman qualified for Eastern Nationals in 2017 and 2018, and was the Region 5 Level 9 floor champion in 2018. Most recently in 2021, the Novi, Mich. native became the Level 10 Michigan State Floor Champion, and helped her team finish third overall at the meet.
By way of Islip Terrace, N.Y., Bergin comes to Ypsilanti from Apex Athletics under coaches Rob Wing and Amanda Depaola. The incoming freshman was a 2021 Level 10 Development Program National Qualifier, and competed at the Level 10 Region 6 Championships where she placed third on vault and seventh on bars and all-around.
Lewis does not have to travel far to get to Ypsilanti, coming from Grand Rapids, Mich. The incoming freshman trained at Ascend Gymnastics under coaches Brett Wargo and Sara Korngold, winning the 2021 Level 10 Washington State Team Championship.
Fisher becomes Eastern's second current gymnast from Alabama, joining Anna Grace McCullough (Birmingham, Ala.-Briarwood Christian). Having trained at Mountain Brook Gymnastics under coaches Helen Nabors and Hanna Martin, the newcomer competed at the 2021 Level 10 Region 8 Championships, claiming fourth on vault and seventh in all-around.
