Nat Phillips is staying at Liverpool after agreeing a new four-year contract.
The popular centre-back had been expected to leave Anfield on deadline day in search of regular first-team football.
However, in the absence of a suitable offer, Liverpool have now decided to keep him on board and his progress over the course of 2021 has been rewarded with improved terms.
Upon signing his new deal, Phillips said: “Obviously after last year, it’s really nice to get that reward from the club. I’m happy to be sticking around and being available if the club need to call on me again. I’m excited for the next chapter and just to see what that brings.”
Phillips, whose previous deal ran until 2023, played an integral part in helping Liverpool qualify for the Champions League with his performances in the second half of last season.
The 24-year-old has since dropped down the pecking order following the signing of Ibrahima Konate and the return to fitness of Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez. But he will now stay put to provide extra cover and competition for places.
Liverpool had received plenty of enquiries for Phillips but no firm offers for a defender they value at around £12 million and they weren’t prepared to sanction a loan.
