Chicago bringing big, brassy sound to Springfield Symphony Hall - MassLive.com

The big, brassy sounds of Chicago will blow into Springfield on Wednesday, Oct. 6, when the legendary rock and roll band performs at Symphony Hall in a concert presented by MGM Springfield.

Showtime is 8 p.m.

Formed in 1967 in the city they love - Chicago, Illinois - Chicago has recorded 37 albums, sold over 100,000,000 records, and are one of the longest-running and best-selling music groups still performing. They have had five #1 albums and 21 Top Ten singles.

Their first album, released in 1969 under the name Chicago Transit Authority, was a double album that found airplay on FM stations, but contained no hit singles for AM play. It wasn’t until their second album, another double album simply titled Chicago, reflecting their new shortened name, that airplay on AM radio would result in two Top 10 hits - “Make Me Smile” and “25 or 6 to 4.” It was later renamed Chicago II, a trend that would continue for most albums using Roman numerals as the title of each new release.

The band’s current lineup includes three original band members: Robert Lamm on keyboards and vocals, Lee Loughnane on trumpet and vocals and James Pankow on trombone. They are accompanied by Wally Reyes, Jr. on drums, Keith Howland on guitar and vocals, Lou Pardini on keyboards and vocals, Ray Herrmann on sax and flute, Neil Donell on vocals, Brett Simons on bass and Ramon “Ray” Yslas on percussion.

Over the years, the band has earned many accolades including The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2020 GRAMMYS, and the band’s first album, Chicago Transit Authority, was inducted into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame in 2014. Also, Robert Lamm and James Pankow were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2017. They are responsible for some of Chicago’s mega-hits including, “25 or 6 to 4,” “Saturday In The Park,” “Feelin’ Stronger Every Day,” “Make Me Smile,” and many more.

While continuing to tour and perform extensively - Chicago recently finished a three-show limited engagement at The Venetian Resort in Las Vegas for the fourth year in a row and have teamed up with Earth, Wind and Fire for several successful tours - the band lacks the chart success of their heyday. Chicago XXXVI - the band’s first full album of new material since 2006 - was released in 2014 and entered the Billboard 200 at number 82. Their latest album, Chicago XXXVII: Chicago Christmas, was released in 2019 and contained nearly all original material written by the group except for three tracks. Their fourth Christmas album, it reached #1 on the Billboard Holiday Albums Sales Chart.

Tickets are on sale at MGMSpringfield.com, Ticketmaster.com and the MGM Springfield Box Office.
