“Dear House Sound Engineer”
Let’s have a talk about the function of music during the course of a show, OK?
Let’s assume you have two bands performing, or one band playing two sets (this works for multiple bands and multiple sets).
Let’s also assume, because I am an optimist, that you are not trying to cause permanent ear damage to the patrons. Louder isn’t better, it’s just louder. We are hoping that patrons have come to listen to the bands AND be able to order drinks from the bar without screaming.
First set is over. People were listening to the band, the desired goal. Now there is a set break. You have two options. Will you:
[1] Play music in the background so that patrons can have conversations at reasonable levels, without shouting, OR
[2] Assume that you are a famous EDM DJ ready to pump the hall with a bazillion watts of bass power to show off your actually impressive song selection, forcing people to leave the venue to have conversations or forcing them to shriek at each other over the ear-splitting music.
You have a choice to make. We hope you make the one that is best for every person in your establishment.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be a [1], not a [2].
Chris Fama (in the photo) of Dunedin Brewery is most definitely a [1], and we say THANK YOU! We bet you know some just like him!
