MECHANICVILLE, NY – The Red Raiders seemed to be well on their way to victory after the first half on Saturday evening at Mechanicville High School. The Sir Bills, of Johnstown, had other ideas.
After Mechanicville had the first three touchdowns of the game, Johnstown scored four unanswered to win the game by a score of 28-21.
“We just have have to turn the page quick,” said Mechanicville coach Craig Cavotta. “We have a short week to Cobleskill next week and we’re going to have to make adjustments, see who’s hurt and who can play and put that game-plan together.”
Isaiah Culbreth, a Red Raider senior and transfer coming from Alabama, scored the first two touchdowns of the game for Mechanicville. He went nearly the entire distance of the field on the first, going for 84 yards. He found the end zone for a second time, in the second quarter, rushing for 26 yards.
The Red Raiders led 14-0 going into halftime.
Andrew Sgambati would scamper in from three-yards out to begin the third, but that wasn’t before a big loss for Mechanicville.
Early in the third, Culbreth went down with an injury to his shin – a suspected break or fracture. Prior to his exit, he rushed for a total of 163 yards on eight carries. He was helped back to the sideline by his coaches and eventually carted off the field by medical personnel.
From there, it was all downhill for Mechanicville.
“He’s a big part of what we’re doing. He went down and the guys were able to put a drive together and score, but we started to struggle with some other things. We struggled to move the ball on offense and we struggled to stop them,” Cavotta said. “We preach that it’s next man up and that you have to know what you’re doing. It’s just when you’re moving pieces that might not fit in that exact spot and trying to apply new things in the middle of the game.”
Not only was he a huge loss offensively, Culbreth – who had six tackles – was sorely missed on defense.
“Isaiah’s been a great addition from the first day we saw him. We knew he was going to be a special player, both on offense and on defense. He’s been a great leader, great with our younger players – he’s a great senior leader.”
Bryce Mureness got the Sir Bills on the board for the first time with a 70-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Frank. Marcus Wilson then ran for a 22-yard touchdown, making the score 21-14 just before the end of the third quarter.
Mureness then finished off a drive from three yards out, to tie the game at 21-21. Marcus Wilson put Johnstown up a touchdown with a nine-yard run with 1:25 left in the game.
