MASK POLICY: All students, employees & visitors to campus are required to wear a mask indoors, regardless of vaccination status.

SJU expects masking for unvaccinated individuals in high-density outdoor events where social distancing cannot be maintained.

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (1-1 overall) won its home opener with a 2-0 shutout of Wisconsin-Platteville last Saturday (Sept. 4) at Haws Field.

Senior midfielder Drew Engel (De Pere, Wis.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal, his first collegiate tally, 6:31 into the contest. Sophomore midfielder Brian Real Juarez (Shakopee, Minn.) sent a cross into the box where the ball was deflected into the air, bounced, and Engel sent it to the back of the net with a header.

Junior forward Ryan Erickson (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Eagan) added an insurance goal - on a nice left-to-right cross from sophomore midfielder Kaiden Popp (Redmond, Wash./Mount Si) - early in the 74th minute.

Freshman goalkeeper Evan Siefken (Lakeville, Minn./North) made five saves to record his first collegiate shutout.

SJU held a narrow edge in shots, 8-7, though the Pioneers posted statistical advantages in shots on goal (5-4) and corner kicks (6-3).

A LOOK AT THE LOGGERS: Puget Sound (1-1 overall) suffered its first loss of the season, 2-1, Saturday (Sept. 4) at Augsburg. Junior Ryan Smith scored his second goal in as many games, 1:50 in the contest. The Auggies, however, answered in the 30th minute and scored what proved to be the game-winning tally less than five minutes later. UPS out-shot Augsburg, 13-10 (7-5 on goal). The two teams combined for 30 fouls (17-13 in favor of UPS) and seven yellow cards (4-3 in favor of UPS). Sophomore Andrew Matheny has played all 180 minutes in net so far this fall and has a 1.00 GAA and five saves (.714 pct.). The Loggers were picked to finish fifth out of eight teams in the Northwest Conference's (NWC) preseason coaches' poll.

THE SERIES: The Johnnies are 0-2 all-time against Puget Sound, though both games took place in Tacoma, Wash.

NINE YEARS AGO: The most recent meeting between the two soccer programs was a 3-1 win for Puget Sound on Oct. 7, 2012. Carson Swope gave the Loggers a 1-0 lead 10:45 into the match and Sam Zisette made it 2-0 at the 65:19 mark.

David Wee '15 cut the deficit to 2-1 with his team-leading fifth goal of the season, unassisted, 6:39 later. Andrew White cushioned UPS' lead with 2:45 left.

Kevin Lebahn '16 made four saves in the loss as SJU out-shot Puget Sound 12-9, though the Loggers held a 7-4 advantage on goal. Corner kicks were 7-6 in favor of UPS and the Johnnies were called for offsides four times. At the time, the Loggers had received votes in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national poll (Oct. 2) and were listed fourth in the West Region rankings.

AGAINST THE NWC: SJU 2-0 against Linfield (Ore.), the only other team it has faced from the NWC: 1-0 in 2001 and 2-0 in 2012. Today's game, however, showcases SJU's first opponent from the Pacific Northwest in Collegeville.
