NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ohio Valley Conference play opened for the University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team this evening as the Skyhawks fell in four sets (17-25, 23-25, 27-25, 19-25) in the first of a two-match series at Belmont.
Haeleigh Paulino accumulated her sixth double-double of the 2021 campaign as the sophomore setter out of Peoria, Ariz. tallied 39 assists and 12 digs. Baillie Kearns and Dylan Mott also scooped up double-digit digs with 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
Offensively, Karen Scanlon recorded a team-high 11 kills while Logan Wallick slammed down 10 kills. Olivia Saunders had seven kills with no errors on 20 swings, garnering a team-best .350 hitting percentage for UT Martin (4-10, 0-1 OVC).
The Bruins (4-8, 2-0 OVC) started out on the right foot, racing out to a 10-1 advantage in the first set. Belmont led 15-3 before kills by Addison Conley, Saunders, Wallick led to a 3-1 Skyhawk run. Scanlon was later responsible for two straight UT Martin kills as the Skyhawks went on an 8-2 run late but ultimately the deficit was too large to overcome. Saunders collected three kills in five swings while Kearns and Paulino shared the team lead with five digs apiece in the opening set.
After Belmont claimed a 5-1 lead to begin the second stanza, UT Martin charged back with the next seven points of the contest. Francela Ulate was the biggest factor in the run as the graduate transfer from Heredia, Costa Rica dialed up three kills during that span. A Wallick kill extended the Skyhawk advantage out to 13-8 but the Bruins stormed back to take a 19-18 advantage. Two straight kills out of Wallick flipped the score to a 23-22 UT Martin lead but Belmont scored the final three points of the set to go ahead by a 2-0 margin. The Skyhawks hit .238 in the second set as a half-dozen UT Martin players had multiple kills.
The third stanza included 20 ties and six lead changes as no team led by more than two points at any stage. Audrey Haworth caught fire in the early stages of the third set, managing three kills in a row for UT Martin. Wallick had two kills in the span of three points midway through the stanza before back-to-back Skyhawk points (Zoe Merriweather kill, Mott service ace) made the score 21-19 in favor of UT Martin. The Skyhawks cashed in their fourth chance at set point thanks to Addy Vaughn, whose kill made the score 26-25 before teaming up with Merriweather for a block assist that proved to be the set-clincher. Paulino registered 16 assists for a UT Martin offense that hit .286 (18 kills against six errors) in 42 attempts.
A kill from Merriweather resulted in an early tie in the fourth set but the Bruins started on a 6-1 run. Wallick delivered a kill that trimmed the Skyhawk lead to four points (9-5) but Belmont answered right back with three consecutive points. Back-to-back kills from Scanlon and Merriweather pulled UT Martin back within four points at 12-8 but the Bruins responded with a 6-1 run and the Skyhawks would not get any closer than four points the rest of the way. Scanlon generated team-highs of three kills and five digs in the final set.
UT Martin will look to split its OVC-opening series at Belmont tomorrow when the two teams clash at 2 p.m. at the Curb Event Center.
