Four Blue Demons Take On Premier Tennis Competition - DePaul Blue Demons

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com
CHICAGO – Four Blue Demons have been selected to play in the toughest and most competitive tennis tournament of the fall season, the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.

Marino Jakic, Tripp Tuff and Luuk Wassenaar open up on Saturday in the singles Pre-qualifying Round. That will conclude on Sunday.

Saturday consists of first and second-round singles with third round and Qualifying Round singles on Sunday along with one round of consolation matches. There are 256 players in the Pre-qualifying field.

The final 16 from pre-qualifying join Vito Tonejc and the rest of the 112 players in the Qualifying singles field on Monday for first-round singles along with first and second-round doubles. The Qualifying field includes automatic, at-large and wild-card selections.

Winners advance to Tuesday's second round and Qualifying Round singles plus Qualifying Round doubles. Sixteen qualifiers will join 48 automatic qualifiers for Wednesday's main draw. There is one round of consolation matches on Tuesday.

By virtue of his ITA national preseason ranking, Tonejc was placed in the Qualifying singles field. Tonejc and Jakic were at-large selections for the 64-team Qualifying doubles field. Winning three matches would advance the Blue Demon duo to the main draw.

Needless to say, advancing to the singles main draw is a formidable challenge. Tonejc would need to win three qualifying matches against many of the top players in the nation to reach the final 16.

Moving on from the pre-qualifying bracket is even more daunting. Out of the 256 entrants, only 16 advance to the Qualifying Round.

But these four Blue Demons are no strangers to prevailing when the odds are stacked against them. Remember, thanks to Wassenaar's incredible comeback from quadruple match point last April, DePaul won its first BIG EAST title.

This quartet is more than ready to pull off a few surprises in Tulsa.

Tuff is off to a fast start with a 6-1 singles record and will bring a five-match winning streak into Tulsa. Tonejc is 5-3 while Wassenaar is 2-1 and the freshman Jakic 4-4.
