Point source sound system replaces US theatre's line arrays - AV Magazine

The Granada Theater, a 95-year-old, 1,500 seat venue located in the Santa Barbara Center for the Performing Arts in California, has recently installed a new point source sound system which is able to project 90 degrees of audio both vertically and horizontally.

The theatre had previously used a traditional split line stack array system. However, it was found that it wasn’t able to deliver a pristine stereo signal to every seat in the house.

The new Aerowave Sound System from Ocean Way Audio is also able to deliver a direct stereo signal to every seat in the house with minimal boundary reflections.

Aside from achieving a full-bandwidth response that is capable of delivering an even, stereo response throughout the venue, the new system is extremely versatile and able to handle a variety of performances across many genres.

“In a very live venue, the more sources you have of sound that hit and create reflections from side walls, the less clear and less defined the sound is. And if there are many reflections in a room, it can reduce resolution and definition – even with dialogue,” said Allen Sides, CEO and owner of Aerowave.

“Our system is a point-source, constant-directivity system. So instead of being split into four separate pieces, it is a single system that sits in ideal positions. This eliminates tons of reflections from the four sources – you only get one set of reflections from the point source.”

The system was debuted at a Mariachi opera entitled “Cruzar la Cara de la Luna” by Los Camperos earlier this month.

The AeroWave system also features complete directivity-control to 100 Hz, so low-frequency information goes out directly into the auditorium rather than creating first, second or third wave reflections. The net result is the elimination of most unwanted reflections and a more defined sound.

The Aerowave sound system is able to project sound at a 90 degree angle both vertically and horizontally, allowing for every seat in the auditorium to receive a clear sound signal

The system is also 10dB more efficient than the conventional set-up due to its straight horn design, meaning that only a third of the power is needed to reach the same volume.

“The hall definitely sounds more like a control room than it did before, and the Ocean Way system really seems to control the frequency spectrum much farther down on the frequency range,” said Granada engineer, Jon Fowler.

“Also, the sound seems cleaner now in both the house and on the stage. Because of that, the stereo imaging has just been fantastic. That was one of the things that Allen talked about in when he set his goals for this room, and one of the first things I ever learned about in audio engineering.”
