SIOUX FALLS, S.D.- The No. 13-ranked Southwest Minnesota State University volleyball team (17-5 Overall, 9-5 NSIC) fell in four sets on the road at the University of Sioux Falls (14-8, 9-5) by a score of 25-21, 25-27, 27-25, 25-21. It is the first four-set loss for the Mustangs this season.

Angela Young recorded 20 kills and nine digs to lead the way for SMSU. Meg Schmidt would add 17 kills, six digs, and four blocks with a .394 hitting percentage. Emma VanHeel led the way defensively, collecting a career-high 10 blocks to go with 10 kills, while Payton Hjerleid would lead the team with 11 digs.

The first set saw a 4-1 USF lead turn into an 11-7 SMSU lead after a flurry of kills and blocks. The Cougars would respond with a 10-3 run of their own to take a 17-14 lead. After SMSU narrowed the gap to 19-17, USF score five unanswered to get to set point. A late charge by the Mustangs would not be enough, as their 4-0 run would be ended by an attack error to give USF set one.

The second set was competitive early, with USF mounting an 11-9 lead before the Mustangs would call a timeout. USF would continue applying pressure, eventually taking a 21-17 lead before the Mustangs would break through. A 7-1 charge by SMSU would get them to set point at 24-22, and although USF would tie the match at 24-24, SMSU would score three of the next four points to even the match at one set apiece.

The third set would begin with the teams splitting the first twelve points before SMSU was able to open it up. A 6-0 run would double up USF at 12-6, and SMSU would continue to apply pressure until leading 20-11. This would mark the turning point of the match, as USF began their march back, chipping away at a SMSU lead that would eventually vanish as USF would take 16 of the final 21 points, including six of the final seven points after trailing 24-21 to take a 2-1 advantage into set four.

SMSU and USF would share the first 20 points of the set, as neither team seemed to be able to get on a run. USF would take consecutive points to make it 12-10 before SMSU would call a timeout to attempt to put out the fire. USF would end up scoring on a pair of aces out of the timeout, but SMSU would neutralize those with a pair of their own points to cut their deficit to 14-12. The teams would continue trading points, as SMSU would score to make it 22-19 USF and force the Cougars to call a timeout, but USF would score a pair after the timeout, and closed the match out after a pair of SMSU points.

SMSU recorded 54 kills compared to the 52 delivered by USF, but would outhit .191-.189 while getting out-blocked 14-13.

SMSU has now lost four consecutive road matches for the first time in two years.

The Mustangs return home Saturday, hosting No. 11 Wayne State in the PE Gym at 1 p.m.
