CHAPEL HILL – Carolina gymnastics head coach Danna Durante and her staff have officially announced the signing of four National Letters of Intent from Amy Wozniak, Paige Prejean, Kaya Forbes and Gwen Fink to join the Tar Heels.
"We're delighted to welcome all four of these incredible young women to the Carolina Gymnastics family," Durante said. "As a class, they are well-rounded, hard-working and driven both academically and athletically. Each of them has a vision of how they can be a positive influence in the world, what they want to accomplish beyond sport and see the potential for Carolina to help connect them with their dreams.
From a gymnastics perspective, all four of these student-athletes will bring a high-skill level that will make an immediate impact on our program. They bring with them a growth mindset and readiness to learn and develop throughout their collegiate career.
Gwen, Kaya, Paige, and Amy are humble, competitive, and eager to be a part of the development of Carolina gymnastics. We can't wait for them to join us in Fall 2022."
Name: Gwen Fink
Hometown: Fort Mill, S.C.
Club Team: Southeastern Gymnastics
High School: Nation Ford High School
Fink joins Carolina gymnastics from her hometown of Fort Mill, S.C. She attends Nation Ford High School and trains at Southeastern Gymnastics under coaches Ludmilla Shobe, Sophia Managadze and Vladimir Taran. Fink was a 2020 Nastia Cup Qualifier, a ten-time state qualifier, a seven-time regional qualifier and a three-time national qualifier. She competed twice at the Junior Olympic National Championships, placing first on bars in 2019 and seventh on beam in 2018. At the 2021 Women's Development Program National Championships, Fink placed fourth on vault.
CollegeGymNews.com ranks Fink as a five-star recruit.
"Gwen is a consistent, steady, fierce competitor who will bring not only a high skill level, but also power, and grace across all four events," said Durante. "We are excited to have Gwen join our team with so many connections to UNC and her family being long time Tar Heel fans."
Fink is the daughter of Kevin Fink and Dany Fink, and has three siblings: Sydney, Shamus Fink and Brittany. She plans on majoring in political science at Carolina with the goal of becoming an attorney.
Name: Kaya Forbes
Hometown: Gonzales, La.
Club: Peak Athletic Center
High School: Dutchtown High School
Forbes joins the Carolina gymnastics family from Gonzales, La., where she attends Dutchtown High School. She trains at Peak Athletic Center under coaches Jazz Carmichael, Franki Holmes and Jessica Savona. Forbes was crowed the 2021 Louisiana Level 10 vault state champion and helped her team to a first-place title at the meet. Forbes also came in sixth at the in the all-around at the 2021 Region B regionals.
"Kaya packs a ton of POWER in her small frame," Durante said. "She will make an enormous impact in our vault and floor lineups, and we see strong, untapped potential in her bars and beam. Fans will love seeing her in Carolina Blue as she wows them with her mighty gymnastics."
Forbes is the daughter of Lenore and Alvin Forbes and has two older siblings, Trey and Ayana. She plans on majoring in pre-med at Carolina with the goal of becoming anesthesiologist.
Name: Paige Prejean
Hometown: Houston, Texas
Club Team: Woodlands Gymnastics Academy
High School: Homeschooled
Prejean joins the Tar Heels from Houston, Texas. She is homeschooled and trains at Woodlands Gymnastics Academy where she is coached by Jason Waldon. Prejean is the 2019 Level 10 state and regional vault champion. She was also the 2018 Level 9 regional vault champion and 2016 Level 8 state champion.
"Paige will bring exceptional difficulty on all four events, with power being one of her greatest assets on vault, bars, and floor," Durante said. "She is a dynamic athlete who will be instrumental in the continued growth of Carolina Gymnastics."
Prejean is the daughter of Tiffany Lynch and Brett Prejean. She plans on studying computer science at Carolina with the goal of coding video games or programing computers.
Name: Amy Wozniak
Hometown: Wheaton, Ill.
Club Team: Legacy Elite Gymnastics
High School: Wheaton North
Wozniak arrives in Chapel Hill from Wheaton, Ill. She attends Wheaton North and trains at Legacy Elite Gymnastics under coaches Jiani Wu, Anna Li and Yuejiu Li. Wozniak is a two-time Junior Olympic National Championship Qualifier (2019, 2021), helping her team to a Level 10 team state championship in 2019. She also holds titles as the 2019 Level 9 all-around state and regional champion and the 2019 bars regional champion. In 2021, she was crowned the state floor champion.
"Amy brings with her incredible floor and bars, as well as strong potential on floor and beam," said Durante. "Her enthusiasm and love for Carolina are infectious and she is tremendous athlete to round out the 2022 recruiting class."
Wozniak is the daughter of Michele and David Wozniak and has five siblings: Sarah, Megan, Hannah, Rachel, and Brian. She plans on majoring in either political science or psychology at Carolina with the goal of becoming a lawyer.
