VERMILLION, S.D. — Omaha avenged its only loss in Summit League play and clinched at least a share of its first Summit title by downing South Dakota 3-1 Sunday inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center before a season-high 1,259 fans. Scores went 25-27, 25-15, 25-23, and 25-21.
The Mavericks (18-8, 15-1 Summit) got 16 kills and 14 digs from Shayla McCormick, who hit .325 for the match. Sadie Limback and Marriah Buss added 12 kills apiece. It was the ninth straight win for Omaha since dropping a five-setter against South Dakota at home a month to the day. All but two of those wins have been sweeps.
"This one is a frustrating loss for us," coach Leanne Williamson said. "We didn't play the cleanest, but we were able to do enough to win the first set. They in set two, they pushed us right away and we never really recovered from that.
"It was hard to get into a really good rhythm, it never felt like we were in a really good flow."
South Dakota (16-9, 13-3) got 17 kills and 12 digs from Elizabeth Juhnke, who posted her 13th double-double of the season, but saw a six-match win streak come to an end.
South Dakota middle blocker Madison Harms had 11 kills and six blocks while hitting .556, the Maverick defense was solid against the Coyotes' other attackers. A strong serving effort aided the defense and Omaha managed nine aces in all. The serve helped UNO rattle off the final four points of the fourth set after USD had fought back to tie it at 21-21.
On the other side, South Dakota posted 16 service errors against four aces, and many of those came at crucial times during the match.
The Coyotes were nursing a 22-21 lead in set three, before Omaha rattled off four of the next five points to win the set.
South Dakota, which entered the match leading the Summit League with a .310 attack percentage in league matches, was held to its lowest offensive attack percentage (.160) in 11 home matches this season and second-lowest in Summit League play, coming up with only 44 kills on 144 swings to go with 21 errors.
The Coyotes had 16 of those 44 kills in the set one victory and were limited to single digits in kills in sets two and four.
Madison Jurgens had 37 assists and 12 digs to go with three kills and one service ace while Lolo Weideman contributed 20 digs, four assists and one ace.
"They put pressure on us right away and we didn't handle it very well," said Williamson. "It's what's going to happen when you play good teams."
The Coyotes were 10-0 at home this season entering the match. USD, now tied with Denver but owning the tiebreaker, will need road wins against North Dakota (1-27, 0-16) and North Dakota State (12-16, 6-10) to secure a first-round bye in the upcoming Summit League Tournament to be held in Vermillion.
