BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – After taking a 2-0 lead over its opponent for the second-straight match, the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team would not be denied on Tuesday evening as they were the match prior. Facing off against Cal Poly in a battle between the Big West Conference's third- and fourth-place teams, the Roadrunners rebounded from a tough third set to earn a 3-1 win (25-14, 25-21, 12-25, 25-22) over the Mustangs.
Redshirt junior Brooke Boiseau posted six kills in the fourth and final set, leading Bakersfield to their first win over Cal Poly since 2012. After the match, Boiseau talked about the resilience the `Runners showed in responding to the Mustangs' third-set surge: "There was a lot of conversation about how we needed to bounce back and just play ourselves. We really lost ourselves in that set, but we knew we were capable. We played amazing in the first and second sets, so it was all about regrouping and refocusing on what we needed to do instead of getting caught in the chaos of everything."
Boiseau's team-high 13 kills came on a .500 hitting clip and the middle blocker also added three blocks against the Mustangs. Junior setter Seleisa Elisaia ran the floor to the tune of 33 assists, seven kills, three blocks, and three aces. Junior libero Paige Calvin tallied 16 digs, four assists, and two aces to help the `Runners to victory.
Bakersfield held a slim, 10-9 lead on Cal Poly in the first set, but the `Runners finished the opening game on a 15-5 run to take a dominant, 25-14 win. CSUB hit .200 on the set while holding the potent Mustang offense to a .000 clip with seven kills and seven errors.
In Set 2, both teams hit over .300, but CSUB middle blocker Hana Makonova was the difference maker. The redshirt sophomore sent seven kills to the floor in the second set alone and helped Bakersfield to a 2-0 lead on the match with a 25-21 win. Makonova finished the evening ten kills and six blocks.
As well as Bakersfield played in the first two sets, the `Runners came out flat in Set 3 and Cal Poly took advantage. The visiting Mustangs jumped out to a 12-1 lead before CSUB slowly pulled its way back into the set. The `Runner push was not enough as Cal Poly extended the match with a 25-12 victory.
In the fourth set, Cal Poly led CSUB 17-12 and looked ready to send the two teams to the deciding set, but the `Runners had other plans. Bakersfield finished the match with a 13-5 run, winning the final set 25-22.
With the win, CSUB improved to 17-8 on the year and 10-7 in Big West Conference play. Predicted to finish ninth of eleven teams in the preseason poll, Bakersfield's victory on Tuesday pulled the `Runners within one win of Cal Poly (13-15, 11-6 BWC) for third in the league standings.
CSUB will host one final home match this season on Friday, Nov. 19, when Big West-leading Hawai'i (18-6, 15-1 BWC) comes to the Icardo Center. The Rainbow Wahine and `Runners are set to battle at 5 p.m. (PT) on Friday with a Senior Night ceremony scheduled to honor Bakersfield's four graduating seniors prior to the match.
