SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Duke volleyball team secured a 3-1 victory (25-20, 21-25, 25-20, 25-18) against Syracuse Sunday afternoon in Syracuse, N.Y.
With the victory, the Blue Devils improve to 16-12 (7-10) as the Orange drop to 16-13 (5-12 ACC).
"This was a team effort from the sideline to the court," head coach Jolene Nagel said. "We had a very slow start today and set ourselves back, but this group persevered and dug their way out to get the first set. That was crucial for us. We began winning some of the scramble plays which helped as well. In the third set, we had some key blocks for stops. It was nice to see our serve was consistently challenging and we were steady in our serve receive.
The Blue Devils were led offensively by senior Ade Owokoniran and junior Gracie Johnson with 16 and 12 kills, respectively, as Duke hit .233 percent for the team. Graduate student Payton Schwantz also added nine kills and just one error for a .417 hitting percentage. Setter Camille Nazor dished 37 assists while libero Mackenzie Cole picked up 20 digs. Sophomore Georgia Stavrinides paced the blocking corps with 10 blocks, including five solo, for a career high. Johnson and Schwantz also racked up 16 and 12 digs, respectively.
Duke fell behind 14-5 in the opening frame but used an 10-1 run to tie the match up at 15-15 to put the momentum on Duke's side. Cole tallied Duke's fifth ace of the first set to give Duke a 1-0 lead heading into the second.
Owokoniran knocked down consecutive kills late in the second as the Orange led 23-20, but Duke couldn't stop Marina Markova from collecting her 11th kill to tie the match (1-1).
Duke used a powerful .268 hitting percentage in the third to take a 2-1 lead with help from Owokoniran's six kills and zero errors. Schwantz also transitioned to the front row during this set and tallied five kills to hit .455 percent.
Nagel's squad continued with its momentum into the fourth set to outhit the Orange .281 percent to .000. The Blue Devils' blocking corps also came alive with 11 blocks as Stavrinides collected six.
