SAINT PAUL, MINN. – The Illinois State women's basketball team (1-1) shot 56.9% (29-of-51) from the field and 46.7% (7-of-15) from beyond the arc en route to a 70-55 win over St. Thomas (0-2) at Schoenecker Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Redbirds had four players finish in double figures in the victory, led by a 14-point, four-assist performance by redshirt sophomore Maya Wong.

Junior forward DeAnna Wilson had a game-high six rebounds, scoring seven of her 13 points in the fourth quarter. Redshirt junior Mary Crompton and fifth year Juliunn Redmond ended with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

TURNING POINT
The Redbirds jumped out to an early 10-0 lead from the start, thanks to pairs of field goals by Wilson and Wong and a lay-up from Redmond. ISU did not allow the Tommies to score until the 5:33 mark in the first quarter, finishing the period with a 10-point lead, 16-6.

ISU did not relinquish the lead the remainder of the way. St. Thomas pulled as close as four points early in the third quarter but could not stifle the hot-shooting Redbirds who rebuilt their lead up to 22 points midway through the fourth, prior to ending with the final 70-55 score line.

IN THE BOX SCORE

  • The last time the Redbirds shot over 55.0% from the floor was when they took down No. 17/25 Missouri State at Redbird Arena, 78-66, on Feb. 27, 2020.
  • Illinois State outrebounded St. Thomas, 24-15, and had a 32-16 advantage in points in the paint.
  • The last time Illinois State had four players score in double figures was in ISU's WNIT win over Samford (March 20, 2021). Redmond has now finished in double digit scoring in seven-straight games (and in 37 of 55 career games).
  • Crompton extended her three-point shooting streak, having now made 3+ triples in each of her last five games (and in 26 of 60 career games).

QUOTE FROM HEAD COACH KRISTEN GILLESPIE
On ISU's fast start to the game: "I thought we came out with high energy and did a great job in the first quarter. We need to work on consistency – that's a big word we've been talking about in our program as you can see we hit a lull in the second quarter. That's just something we need to work on going forward, focusing in at the start of every quarter and all the way through to the finish."

On the first win of the year: "This is a great feeling, and we just need to continue to work and get better. I know this was a step in the right direction and we're on the way to where we want to be."
