Golder Retires After Guiding Michigan to Four NCAA Titles, Six Big Ten Crowns

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan mens gymnastics head coach Kurt Golder announced Monday (Nov. 29) that he is retiring after 25 seasons leading the Wolverines.
Just the fourth coach in the program's history, Golder led the Wolverines to four NCAA championships (1999, 2010, 2013, 2014) and six Big Ten Conference titles.
"Kurt Golder has been a positive advocate for the University of Michigan and the sport of men's gymnastics at a national level for a long time," said Warde Manuel, the Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics. "We are thankful for his accomplished service and wish him well in his next chapter."
Named the NCAA regional and national coach of the year in 1999, 2010, 2013, 2014 and 2021, Golder produced 118 NCAA All-Americans, 17 NCAA individual national champions and 40 individual Big Ten champions.
Golder graduated from Michigan in 1977 with a degree from the School of Education after earning three letters in gymnastics, and was a part of the Wolverines' 1975 Big Ten championship team. In 2008, Golder was inducted into the Alpena (Mich.) High School Alumni Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Alpena Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
Assistant coach Yuan Xiao, now in his 16th season with the program, will lead the program on an interim basis. Michigan will begin its 2022 season on Jan. 8 against Northern Illinois.
