JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The New Jersey City University men's wrestling team fell to the Ursinus College Bears on Saturday night, Nov. 20, at the John J. Moore Athletic and Fitness Center (JMAC) in a traditional dual match by a score of 26-12. The Gothic Knights had four different wrestlers record individual victories in the loss, including junior Jeff Johnson (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) and senior Kyle Hillermeier (Howell, N.J./Freehold Township), who recorded their first wins of the 2021-22 season.
After a defeat in the first match at 157 pounds for the Knights (0-4), Johnson was able to get the squad on the board with a victory at 165 pounds. Johnson defeated Noah Supsic of Ursinus (1-0 by an 8-1 decision to capture his first victory of the year.
The Green and Gold kept the pressure on following the victory by Johnson, as fellow junior Matthew Armamento (Kenilworth, N.J./Roselle Park) recorded his fourth victory in the 174 pound weight class with an impressive 8-2 decision. This was the fourth win on the year for the co-captain and forced a tie between the Bears and NJCU.
Hillermeier managed to get his hand raised following the match after defeating Kyle Schaffer of Ursinus by a 12-6 decision. The co-captain of the Gothic Knights sealed the victory in the 197 pound weight class and kept the NJCU within striking distance for a comeback.
In arguably the match of the night, freshman Andre Ruiz (Little Ferry, N.J./Ridgefield Park) recorded a 5-4 victory by decision after a back and forth battle between he and Romeo Rodriguez. The sophomore fought until the final second of the match, before sealing the victory at 133 pounds thanks to a riding time advantage. Ruiz now leads the Gothic Knights with five victories on the season.
The squad will return to the mat on Saturday, Dec. 4, for the Blue Jay Classic, hosted by Elizabethtown College, in Elizabethtown, Pa.
