Playoff football action is now booked for teams in the Humboldt-Del Norte League following Sunday’s CIF North Coast Section bracket seeding announcements.
The Del Norte High Warriors and St. Bernard’s Academy Crusaders lead the pack in Division 5 play with respective number two and four seeds.
DNHS will be facing off at home against seventh-ranked Archie Williams High School on Friday night at 7 p.m. Meanwhile, St. Bernard’s will be hosting fifth-seeded De Anza High School at Crusader Field on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Del Norte’s boys positioned themselves as the team to beat in the Humboldt-Del Norte league’s Big 4 and among the North Coast giants to topple this fall. The team played to a 6-0 Big 4 record and an 8-1 overall season record, with all eight wins coming in a row following a week 1 loss to Redding’s Enterprise High.
In their latest matchup, the team held down Eureka High in an oppressive 42-0 win at their Crescent City home grounds on Friday night.
On their end, the Crusaders looked primed for playoff competition following their 57-0 rout of Fortuna High on Saturday afternoon. SB’s defense closed out its regular season with another suffocating performance, holding the Huskies to just 13 yards rushing and intercepting multiple throws en route to a shutout victory.
The Saturday afternoon win left St Bernard’s with a 4-3 Big 4 record and an overall 6-4 run in their fall 2021 contests.
Arcata High will be entering the Division 6 bracket as the second seed in its respective NCS bracket and will face San Lorenzo High School on Friday night at McKinleyville High.
The Tigers closed out the regular season with an overall 7-3 record and a 5-1 record in Little 4 conference matchups following a 19-0 loss to Hoopa Valley High which saw Arcata play several second-string players in the absence of eight starters.
To Hoopa Valley’s credit, the team has re-emerged in the past few weeks, coming from dead last in the Little 4’s standings to nab the No. 5 playoff berth in the NCS Division 7 bracket. HVHS has won its past three games by shutout to wrap up the regular season at .500, with a 3-3 conference record and 4-4 against all opponents.
Hoopa’s boys will be making the long drive to Clear Lake High School for a Friday night matchup at 7 p.m.
McKinleyville High will also be entering the D7 bracket as the seventh seed, kicking off at St. Helena High School on Friday at 7 p.m. as well.
The Panthers concluded their regular season with a 5-5 overall record, going 2-4 against this fall’s conference rivals.
