Former LSU starting quarterback Max Johnson announced on Twitter on Friday that he will transfer to Texas A&M. Johnson, a rising junior, announced earlier this month that he was entering the transfer portal.
Johnson started 11 of LSU's 12 games this season, threw for 2,814 yards and tossed 27 touchdowns after winning the job by default after Myles Brennan suffered a season-ending arm injury in fall camp. Brennan, meanwhile, announced that he has withdrawn from the transfer portal on Thursday and will return to LSU. Johnson stepped in as LSU's starting quarterback for the final two games of the season and played in six. He threw for 1,069 yards, eight touchdowns and only one interception, and won SEC Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for 239 yards and three touchdowns in the upset at Florida.
Let's have a look now at the biggest takeaways from Johnson's decision?
Package deal
Johnson will join his brother, four-star tight end Jake Johnson, in College Station. Jake is a four-star prospect and the No. 83 overall player in the Class of 2022, and just signed with the Aggies during the early signing period. That class is currently No. 1 in the nation in the 247Sports Composite rankings heading into the home stretch of the recruiting cycle.
Needless to say, their father, ex-NFL star Brad Johnson, will be thrilled to watch his two sons play college football for the same team at the same time. Maybe he should start looking for a second home in College Station.
Texas A&M's QB battle just got interesting
It's not difficult to connect the dots on what's happening at Texas A&M. Zach Calzada announced his transfer earlier this month despite starting the final 10 games of the 2021 season. He was thrust into action in the first half of the win at Colorado after Haynes King suffered a leg injury that ultimately knocked him out for the season.
King is back at practice, but Blake Bost will start the Gator Bowl against Wake Forest. Plus, Conner Weigman, the No. 19 overall player in the Class of 2021, just signed with coach Jimbo Fisher's squad.
The Aggies now have a medium-sized village of quarterback contenders. Fisher's management of this group will be fascinating throughout the offseason.
Culture of competition
Great teams win in the offseason, and creating a culture of competition where players are fighting for their jobs 24/7/365 is imperative for championship-caliber teams. The four-man competition Fisher has created at quarterback will serve notice to the rest of the roster that nobody's job is safe. That should spark competition throughout the roster this offseason.
There's no doubt that the transfer portal will see Texas A&M players jump into it throughout the offseason. That's inevitable for every team. Great coaches worry about winning now first and dealing with whatever comes after that later. Fisher has signaled to his team that nobody's job is safe ... and that's a good thing.
