CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The University of Illinois Division of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced a second major gift in four years for Fighting Illini capital projects from CA Ventures, a real estate investment company founded by Gies College of Business alumnus Tom Scott. This most recent gift, which also is possible by the Scott Family Foundation, established in 2006 by Tom, Julie and Christopher Scott, will pledge $4 million for the Ubben Basketball Complex renovation and expansion project and $1 million for the Illinois men's tennis program. In 2018, CA Ventures also contributed $2.5 million to the Henry Dale and Betty Smith Football Center to name the rooftop terrace.
"CA Ventures was founded on the notion of making the most of student life, and as an alumnus of the University of Illinois, I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to give back to this community," said Tom Scott, Chief Executive Officer of CA Ventures. "CA is passionate about the pursuit and progress of higher education and is committed to building and fostering communities that promote student success. We hope our contributions do exactly that, creating some of the fondest memories for U of I students."
CA Ventures is a global vertically integrated real estate investment management company with more than $13 billion in assets across the United States, Europe and Latin America. The Chicago-based firm offers comprehensive in-house investment, development and operational services, and specializes in a range of niche, commercial real estate asset classes including student living, senior living, multifamily, industrial, medical office and life sciences. CA Ventures manages real estate investments on behalf of some of the world's largest institutional investors across a range of core, value-add and opportunistic investment vehicles. The firm also offers third-party management services for student and residential assets.
"CA Ventures has been a generous partner of the DIA through many of our student-athlete facilities and initiatives over the past four years," Director of Athletics Josh Whitman said. "We are grateful for their continued support of Fighting Illini Athletics, which is truly changing the experience and the opportunity for success enjoyed by hundreds of student-athletes."
The Ubben renovation and expansion will add approximately 40,000 square feet to the existing structure, while remodeling large portions of the original building. New coaches' offices and entry lobby are included in the project. Two new half courts will be added to both the women's and men's gym spaces, giving the programs additional space to work on player development. The project will feature a strength and conditioning addition, player recovery spaces, and a state-of-the-art sports medicine facility, and will significantly increase the size of the locker rooms and players' lounges. Groundbreaking on new construction is slated to begin in the spring of 2021.
"The impact of a gift of this magnitude cannot be overstated," head women's basketball coach Nancy Fahey said. "We have a plan in place to forge an elite experience for our student-athletes with the revitalization of Ubben, and the generosity shown by CA Ventures will be instrumental in making that vision a reality."
"We are grateful for the support CA Ventures has made to Fighting Illini Basketball, Illinois Athletics, and the University of Illinois," head men's basketball coach Brad Underwood said. "They are committed to providing a first-class experience for our student-athletes, and their generosity toward the Ubben renovation project will ensure that standard is met for everyone who is part of this program."
The $1 million gift for the nationally ranked Fighting Illini men's tennis team will help the program continue providing impactful experiences for its student-athletes and will enhance one of the best complexes in collegiate tennis, the Atkins Tennis Center and Khan Tennis Complex. Under the direction of 16th year head coach Brad Dancer, the Illinois men's tennis team made the NCAA Tournament for 15 consecutive years, including an appearance in the national title match in 2007.

It is a game changer. It will allow us to enhance the student-athlete experience in every facet of their lives including academic support, hosting premier international events, and continuing to provide exceptional distinctive opportunities."
The $5 million gift from CA Ventures counts toward the $300 million fundraising goal for the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics, which is part of "With Illinois," the $2.25 billion University-wide fundraising campaign.
