LORDSTOWN — Members of the Lordstown Christian Church off Tod Avenue are making sure people hear the Sunday sermon and other events at the church with the addition of a new special sound loop system.
Warren Brown of Brown Audio Service LLC, said a wireless hearing loop receiver system was installed at the church to help people hear more clearly.
“There is an advantage of having the sound sent through the hearing aid rather than through speakers,” he said.
Brown said the problem is microphones work best when they are close to the person who is trying to hear.
“We had a microphone system where people were sitting 20 feet away. When you are that far away from the speaker, you are getting all the room noise. People listening through their hearing aids are hearing all the room noise that makes the voice they are trying to hear difficult to understand,” he said. “The microphone, instead of being 20 feet away, is now inches from the pastor’s mouth.”
Cheryl Vance, a church member, said there has been positive responses. She said she attended a meeting where the sound system was demonstrated.
Vance said there are members of the congregation who have trouble hearing the sermon and announcements during worship.
Ruth Stocker West, a member, said she appreciates being able to hear.
“If you can’t hear, what good is it to come to the service? I couldn’t hear the sermon before and now I can hear so much clearer,” West said.
“I was an advocate for this. We felt it will help those who want to be in church and want to be able to hear the sermon. I felt we needed to get this because we knew there were people who could use it just like we had a handicapped ramp put in that people use,” member Ruby Hawkins said.
Vance said former church member Jim Horvath and his wife, Ruth Ann, were in the area visiting family and stopped at the church and told of the hearing loop used at a church they attend.
“If one person hears using the e-coil, it is worth the investment,” Hawkins said, noting there are eight members in the congregation who are hearing challenged.
Brown said the hearing loop has wiring around the room like a giant antenna that puts out a signal people can pick up directly with their hearing devices — either a hearing aid or cochlear implant that has a component called a telecoil.
Brown said while he has many clients, churches are the most common place for installation of the system.
Vance said there are those who don’t have hearing aids who have said the speaker system has helped them hear better as well.
A sign and logo is located outside the church indicating there is a hearing loop system in the church. More than half of the costs for the system were paid with donations.
