A top-five safety in the 2023 recruiting class will make his college commitment live Saturday on CBS Sports HQ at 12:15 p.m. ET, as four-star defensive back Peyton Bowen prepares to choose between Notre Dame, Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn and Baylor. Bowen ranks as the No. 4 safety and No. 59 overall prospect, according to the 247Sports Composite. Coming out of Guyer High School in Denton, Texas, he ranks as the No. 11 player in the state. He showcased his athleticism and versatility as a three-way player (offense, defense, special teams) at the 6A level, helping his team to a state runner-up finish as a junior.
247Sports recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks writes that Bowen projects as a "potential high-major impact player in the future, with immediate special teams value, and a long-term ceiling that could lead to the NFL Draft."
Owns the requisite height and frame with an athletic build. Versatile playmaker for high-caliber Texas Class 6A power. Ample snaps in all three phases at receiver, multiple spots in the secondary, and kick/punt returner. Excellent ball skills. That combines with awareness and instincts to create a ball-productive playmaker. Shows route-running acumen and hands-catching technique at receiver. Also displays terrific body control and adjustment abilities in contested situations. Sudden athlete with lateral mobility and great initial burst and acceleration. Dangerous as a center fielder thanks to ability to cover territory and make plays on the ball. Shows functional athleticism to man up when needed. Turns and locates very well.
The 247Sports Crystal Ball is favoring Notre Dame over the SEC and Big 12 schools also in the running, which would be a huge recruiting win for new coach Marcus Freeman. Promoted after Brian Kelly's exit to LSU, Freeman is pacing towards a top-10 class in 2022 and Bowen's addition would be a big piece of another strong class in 2023.
