MONMOUTH, Ore. – Following three straight road games, the Western Oregon University women's basketball team will look forward to being in Monmouth for the next four games starting this Saturday with Saint Martin's beginning at 2 p.m. inside New PE Gym.
It will be a stretch of all Great Northwest Athletic Conference games as following the game against Saint Martin's, the Wolves will face Alaska Fairbanks on Jan. 11, Montana State Billings on Jan. 13 and Seattle Pacific on Jan. 15.
WOU (4-5, 0-2 GNAC) is coming off of an 84-71 loss at Simon Fraser as the Wolves put together a strong fourth quarter before SFU held on for the win. WOU also faced Western Washington on the trip falling 70-52 on Dec. 30.
The Wolves are averaging 66.3 points per game, making 230-535 (43) from the field, 39-147 (26.5) from three and 98-147 (66.7) from the foul line. WOU also averages 40.4 rebounds, 14 assists, 8.4 steals and 5.4 blocks per game. Opponents average 64.7 points per game, making 196-532 (36.8) from the field, 57-176 (32.4) from three and 133-191 (69.6) from the foul line. Opponents also average 33.3 rebounds, 12.1 assists, 9.2 steals and 2.8 blocks per game.
Meadow Aragon leads the team in points per game (12.7), field goals made (46), rebounds per game (7.7) and blocks (22). She is also shooting almost 60 percent from the field on the season. Tresai McCarver adds 9.7 points and 4.2 rebounds per game, making 30 field goals, a team-high 37 assists and 15 steals. Cali McClave is third on the team in scoring at 9.0 points per game, adding 13 assists, 13 steals and a team-high nine three-pointers. Kaelin Williams-Kennedy is fourth on the team in scoring at 7.4 points per game, adding 23 field goals and is shooting over 46 percent from the field. Madisyn Clark and Makenna Gambee add 5.8 points per game and Ana McClave is at 5.4 points per game.
WOU ranks high nationally and in the top-three in the GNAC in several categories including 27th nationally and leading the GNAC in blocked shots (49), 12th nationally and leading the GNAC in blocked shots per game (5.4), 72nd nationally in defensive rebounds per game (28.2), third in the GNAC in fewest fouls (173), 62nd nationally in field goal percentage (43), 73rd nationally in field goal percentage defense (36.8), 40th nationally and third in the GNAC in rebound margin (7.1), 92nd nationally and third in the GNAC in rebounds per game (40.4).
Individually, Aragon is 25th nationally and second in the GNAC in blocked shots, 11th nationally and second in the GNAC in blocked shots per game (2.4), fourth in the GNAC in defensive rebounds per game (5.3), 19th nationally and leading the GNAC in field goal percentage, seventh in the GNAC in offensive rebounds per game (2.3) and fourth in the GNAC in rebounds per game. McCarver is 60th nationally and third in the GNAC in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.7), sixth in the GNAC in assists, 59th nationally and second in the GNAC in assists per game. Amber Winkler is sixth in the GNAC in blocked shots per game.
Saint Martin's improved to 9-2 overall and 1-1 in GNAC play following a 51-43 win at home this past Tuesday against Alaska Fairbanks. The Saints have won four straight picking up three non-conference wins against Evergreen State, Pacific and Simpson before the win over the Nanooks.
On the season, SMU is averaging 65.9 points, making 275-650 (42.3) from the field, 54-188 (28.7) from three and 121-173 (69.9) from the foul line. The Saints also average 36.9 rebounds, 16.6 assists, 7.3 steals and 2.5 blocks per game. Opponents average 58.4 points, making 232-669 (34.7) from the field, 51-202 (25.2) from three and 127-178 (71.3) from the foul line. Opponents also average 31.1 rebounds, 10.7 assists, 9.4 steals and 2.1 blocks per game.
Claire Dingus leads the way averaging 18.2 points and 7.7 rebounds, along with 33 assists and 23 steals, while making 70 field goals. Rian Clear adds 13 points and 4.4 rebounds per game, making 60 field goals and 37 three-pointers. Josie Matz played in her first game of the season against Alaska scoring 11 points and adding four rebounds and four assists. Tierney DeDonatis adds 9.4 points and a team-high 51 assists.
Saint Martin's holds a 31-10 series advantage since 2001 and have won the past three meetings. The Wolves claimed a 66-56 win during the 2018-19 season in Lacey. During the 2019-20 season, the Saints pulled out a couple of close wins by seven in Lacey and by three in Monmouth.
