Spotify's Sound Up Program Continues to Bring Diverse Voices to Podcasting — Spotify - spotify.com

Since its start in 2018, Spotify’s Sound Up has helped underrepresented creators get their feet—and mics—in the door for podcasting. The program’s aim is to diversify the voices in the audio space by providing participants with educational opportunities, resources, and access to industry experts. Sound Up graduates have released popular shows that have ranked on Spotify’s podcast charts, including Dope Labs, Search Engine Sex, You Heard Me Write, and FOGO: Fear of Going Outside.

Now, four years after its inception, Sound Up has launched in 12 markets (Japan, Italy, the U.S., U.S. LatinX, India, Mexico, Australia, Sweden, the U.K., Germany, Brazil, and Argentina) and helped hundreds of graduates find careers in podcasting.

How does Sound Up work? In each market, 10 participants are selected to be a part of the program. The creators then go through a four-week virtual or in-person immersive experience where they hone their storytelling, get more experience in audio production, and have a chance to workshop their ideas. After the session ends, the participants continue to receive year-round support from Spotify as they create professional pilots of their ideas, which have a chance to become a Spotify Original.

In 2020, as people around the world altered their lifestyles based on social distancing protocols and COVID-19 risks, Sound Up also had to adapt. “It was an incredibly difficult two years where, globally, we had to adjust the program to virtual trainings,” shared Natalie Tulloch, Sound Up Global Lead. “But we also got the chance to see wonderful stories begin to take shape, and now as we launch new podcasts, it feels incredibly gratifying.”

For the Record traveled across the globe to check in on a few of the current and recently graduated program participants to learn more about their experiences and the podcasts they are creating.

Gigi (U.K.)

Gigi just finished the program and is working on her podcast, Journeys With Grace, which is an immersive self-contained story of discovery. From storytelling to copyright details, Gigi’s Sound Up experience taught her plenty about the industry. Her favorite part of the process was developing the trailer and pilot episode. “Layering up my trailer with soundscapes and adding atmospheric audio here and there was fun to me—a stressful kinda fun,” explained the podcaster. “I’m a creative, so seeing my vision come to fruition was a super-dope moment. You can’t really replace that feeling.” Now her focus is on developing the script and finding a way to invite listeners into her show in an intimate way. “I’m looking forward to the process, the vision being out there, and the podcast finding and resonating with the people it’s supposed to.”

For U.K. and Ireland creators who are interested in the Sound Up program, applications are open now through March 14, 2022. Submit your application here.

Fatima Hellgren Camara (Sweden)

Fatima Hellgren Camara’s podcast Välkommen till Ön (Welcome to the Island) is a comedic look at annoying people and their frustrating habits. Each week she discusses these people and whether they should be sent off to a deserted island far, far away. The show just finished its second season, during which Fatima learned how to edit and produce her own episodes. Her favorite part of Sound Up? “To have been given the opportunity to learn an entirely new skill set,” shared the host. “However, my absolute favorite part was getting acquainted with technical equipment.”

Roba Kadhem (Sweden)

Currently in its third season, Lyssna Tjejer (Listen Girls) is a podcast cohosted by Roba Kadhem and Aya Said. On the show, the two discuss topics from Pink Room, Scandinavia’s largest Facebook group for women. Through Sound Up, Roba has experienced a greater sense of community from others in the industry. “It was so cozy to see these incredible people every week and get to know them so well even through a virtual meeting,” explained Roba.

Arunima Tenzin Tara (India)

In Dinner by Ear, host Arunima Tenzin Tara gives listeners tips on preparing dinner in only 30 minutes. Arunima is currently testing out new recipes, developing quick versions of dinners she loves, and reading up on as much food history as possible. Still in the middle of her Sound Up program, all this preparation will allow her to start recording episodes as soon as it’s time. Her favorite part of the experience thus far has been determining why she was making this show and who her audience was. “I think this exercise was something that I enjoyed because it forced me to critically analyze my podcast concept and narrow the audience down to a very particular kind of person,” explained Arunima. “This focus has helped me gain clarity about the kind of recipes to include in the show.” As she moves into the next phase of the program, Arunima will have the chance to record sounds in the kitchen, create original music, and spend time perfecting her voice.

Shreya Dasgupta (India)

Shreya Dasgupta’s podcast, Imagined Tomorrow, features a variety of experts who use their backgrounds in science and technology to speculate on India’s future. Shreya is using the tools she learned in phase one of her Sound Up experience to prepare for a new season; she’s currently in the outlining, researching, and reporting process for upcoming episodes. So far, she’s had two favorite parts of the program. “The first has been getting to know such incredibly creative fellow podcasters,” said Shreya. “The second has been learning from the Sound Up mentors and others on the Spotify team who not only placed their faith in my idea, but have been super committed and enthusiastic about seeing my vision through.” Shreya will soon be entering phase two of her Sound Up experience.

Maickson Serrão (Brazil)

Maickson’s Pavulagem – Contos da Floresta (Pavulagem – Tales From the Forest) is a nonfiction podcast about Amazonian folklore stories. The creator is currently working with his team to map out the storyline for all 12 of the show’s episodes. “We’ll talk about creatures like Mãe da Mata (Mother of the Forest), a really famous legend here, but also unknown tales like the bird that eats people,” shared Maickson. “I have already interviewed some traditional storytellers. These people live off the many rivers in the region and are also elders from Indigenous people from the Brazilian Amazon.” During his Sound Up experience, Maickson appreciated how hands-on the program was while still allowing plenty of opportunity for creative freedom. “I hope that all participants from Sound Up become very successful and that the program continues to impact the lives of many other young talents in our country. Many stories need to be told of Brazil’s pluralities and blooming diversity,” said Maickson.

Samara Costa (Brazil)

ZUMBIR is a podcast that highlights Afrofuturist fictional tales. The creator, Samara Costa, is currently working on ideas for episodes, and that involves a lot of traveling. She recently visited Angola as part of her research. “The Angolan stories and myths made a big impact on me, especially the sound, mysticism, and lifestyle of young Angolans,” explained Samara. “I think that the combination of both Brazilian and Angolan references will be elements that will serve as a basis for the creation of some ZUMBIR episodes.” Her favorite part of the Sound Up experience was seeing her pilot episode come to life, from an idea on paper to a polished episode. “I was able to feel the voice of the characters, how they talk, walk, how they laugh, all through audio.… It was fantastic! All of this was created with the technical and emotional support of everyone involved in Sound Up, from mentors and organizers to friends that I made during the program.”

Caio (Brazil)

Raízes is a documentary podcast that tells the stories of Brazilian families. In the first season, Caio investigates his own origins in an effort to answer one question: Where did I come from? The Sound Up participant is currently working on producing the first season and has already written two scripts. “I’m betting that a lot of people will connect with the charisma of the characters and their stories,” shared Caio. For the next phase of his journey, the podcaster is hoping to continue telling tales from the people of Northeast Brazil.

Lucas Moura (Brazil)

Lucas Moura’s Calunguinha, o cantador de histórias (Calunguinha, the Singer of Tales) is a fictional podcast that Lucas hopes will expand the imagination of Black children by sharing the history of Black people in both Brazil and around the world. Lucas is currently working on finalizing scripts and finding the right voices to make them shine. The creator’s favorite part of the Sound Up program was the artists he was able to meet with for the podcast. “We invited one artist (Lázaro Ramos) to participate in our podcast and he accepted,” explained Lucas. “There it became clear to me that Sound Up is a project that can help broaden my horizons.”

Peppa Smith (Australia)

Yaama Mama is a podcast created by Peppa Smith that focuses on parenting Indigenous kids. Through both serious themes and sarcastic commentary, the show examines and dismantles the way parents are taught to raise children in her community. Peppa is currently in research mode, working on collecting information to be used in her episodes. One of her favorite parts of Sound Up was the people she’s had a chance to meet. “There’s been meetings where I have met with some hugely clever and talented people in the industry,” said the podcaster. “I’ve also been lucky that the other members of the cohort for 2021 are a brilliant, funny, and incredibly good-looking mob.”

These creators and their stories are just a small sampling of the podcasts that are being developed through Sound Up. To learn more about the program and how it’s working to amplify underrepresented voices, visit Sound Up’s website.

Way Way Off-Broadway Theatre Company brings popular musical to stage

By Christina Stock

Vision Editor

After more than two years, Way Way Off Broadway Theatre Company (WWOB) returns to the stage of the Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell Performing Arts Center (ENMU-R PAC). The non-profit theater company specializes in high-tech, professional musical performances such as “Beauty and the Beast,” “Peter Pan,” “Newsies,” “Mary Poppins” and it’s 20th production, the last pre-pandemic offering in November 2019, “Chicago.”

“It’s been a very long two years,” Summer Souza wrote in an email. Souza is WWOB’s artistic director and the show director of the upcoming production of “The Sound of Music.”

“When the shutdowns began, we were only one week away from opening our spring musical, ‘Matilda.’ We all thought that we would have to postpone the show’s opening for a few weeks, but we never imagined it would be two years,” she wrote. Ultimately, WWOB had to cancel the production of “Matilda.”

Tony Souza, who serves as the production’s assistant director, is Summer Souza’s husband. She wrote that part of Tony Souza’s responsibilities is to keep the cast and crew safe and compliant with any health-related measures while the risk of COVID-19 is still present in the community.

Tony Souza is the EMS (emergency medical services) division chief for the Carlsbad Fire Department, and his experience managing COVID-19-related policies makes him an ideal choice to oversee the safety of the cast and crew throughout the rehearsals and the upcoming performances of the musical.

“Safety was our No. 1 priority,” Tony Souza said. “We didn’t want to expose anyone to any unnecessary risk while … putting a show together. We worked closely with Dr. Shawn Powell and the team at ENMU-R to make sure we were following all the rules, which was challenging. Honestly it’s not easy or fun to sing and dance in a mask.”

“We had to schedule ‘fresh-air breaks,’” Summer Souza wrote. “After rehearsing several scenes we would spread out or go outside and remove our masks and just take a few minutes to breathe. That’s why we were so happy to hear that face coverings were no longer required.”

When regulations eased up last year, Summer Souza wrote that she and Tony Souza felt it was the right time for a new show.

WWOB chose the iconic musical production of “The Sound of Music” to begin the new season. According to Summer Souza, Cydni Vandiver is cast as Maria Rainer and Bryan Hunley plays the strict father, Cpt. Georg von Trapp.

“Vandiver and Hunley, both educators, have interesting perspectives on working with the children in the cast, especially after such a long time away from theater,” Summer Souza wrote.

“One of the best parts about being a teacher is the fact that you get to interact with kids and that you get to impart things,” Hunley said. He is the choir director for Roswell High School. “Especially (for) me as a musician and one who directs choirs, it’s really rewarding to get to share music with them and to teach them music, and help them become better performers.”

Vandiver, who teaches at the New Mexico Military Institute, said, “I think for me it was important that the kids felt comfortable on stage. I work with a lot of kids who struggle with communication and putting themselves out there, especially after COVID. Theater forces them to put themselves out there and feel vulnerable, which ultimately is good for them.”

Summer Souza wrote that both Vandiver and Hunley have performed with WWOB previously. “Hunley played Beast in the 2017 production of ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ and Vandiver played Sarah Brown in ‘Guys and Dolls,’ also in 2017,” she wrote.

Asked what Vandiver missed most during the pandemic, she said, “With the theater being dark for two years, it wasn’t so much that I missed being on stage as much as I missed my (theater) family.”

“It’s huge,” Hunley said when asked how it felt to be performing after the widespread shutdowns. “Being locked down and isolated and not getting to perform is difficult for us (performers), so it’s really, really fulfilling.”

For those not familiar with the musical, “The Sound of Music” is based on the real story of Maria Augusta von Trapp, her husband Cpt. Georg von Trapp and their children during the onset of World War II in Austria.

The story follows a young Maria, considered too “wild” to become a nun, who is sent to the strict Austrian naval officer von Trapp, a recent widower. The captain needs a governess for his seven children. Maria, with her enthusiasm and joy for music, encourages the children to have fun and enjoy their childhood, which clashes with the strict regiment of their father. However, it doesn’t take long until the father starts to mellow and he falls in love with Maria. Just when everything seems perfect, the family has to face that their home country Austria is falling under the influence of Nazism. The family has to decide what to do when the captain is offered a commission in Adolf Hitler’s navy.

The stage musical “The Sound of Music” was the last collaboration between Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein in 1959. An instant success with songs such as “My Favorite Things,” “Do Re Mi” and “Sixteen Going on Seventeen,” the musical won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The album earned a Gold Record and a Grammy Award. The motion picture version of “The Sound of Music” was released in 1965 with Julie Andrews as Maria. The film won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and is often considered the most popular movie musical ever made.

The public has two weekends to see “The Sound of Music” at ENMU-R PAC, March 4 to 6 and 11 to 13, with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. For more information, visit waywayoffbroadway.com or its Facebook event page.

Colombia mine explosion kills 11 people, four missing - Reuters

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com

BOGOTA, Feb 27 (Reuters) - An explosion at a coal mine in Colombia's Boyaca province killed 11 people and left four missing, the national mining agency (ANM) said on Sunday.

The accident occurred on Saturday night and was caused by a build up of methane gas at the mine, which is located in the Tasco municipality, the ANM said.

Colombia's mining industry includes huge open-pit and underground projects operated by multinational companies, as well as hundreds of small, informal deposits.

Accidents in the mining sector occur regularly as some enterprises are illegal, or do not properly enforce safety measures.

The mine in Tasco had approval to operate, the ANM said. Rescue crews and fire fighters fear that the four people still missing were also killed in the explosion.

Colombia saw 128 mining accidents in 2021, which killed 148 dead. So far this year 19 mining accidents have taken place, with 36 deaths, according to the ANM.

Sound Advice: How to make your TV Bluetooth compatible - The Union Leader

Q. I looked at the ZVOX AccuVoice AV52 headphones and love the features and $69 sale price, reduced from $199.99.

I have an older Panasonic HDTV. What do I need in order to add Bluetooth so I can send sound to the headphones? My wife is anxious to get good TV sound again, and these headphones with dialogue improvement look like the answer!

—R.B., Brookfield, Wis.

A. You need a Bluetooth transmitter connected to the TV’s optical output. My top recommendation is the $45 Anker Soundsync A3341, which has low latency to avoid lip-sync problems. There are other transmitters available for as low as $30. As long as it has an optical input and promises low latency it should work for you, but the Soundsync ought to be a sure thing.

If you already have something connected to the optical input (like a soundbar or audio system) you can use an optical splitter ($10 to $20) to make two connections from the TV output. If you get the Anker it has optical pass-through, so you will not need a splitter.

You will find the transmitter useful for more than sending TV sound to your wife’s headphones. Preparing dinner in the kitchen, with the TV in view but too but far away to hear comfortably? Pair a Bluetooth speaker to the transmitter and you have TV sound in another room.

Please note the AV52 sale price ends on Feb. 28.

Q. I recently purchased a Sony KD-55X85J television. Upon installation I could not get the signal from my Sony DVP-NS715P DVD player to display.

The people from Best Buy suggested using an HDMI converter ($60 plus HDMI cable) connected to one of the HDMI ports. A comment was made that there was something "special" about Sony's A/V jack and when I contacted Sony, they said there was no approved HDMI converter and the only "approved" connection for devices with RCA outputs was their conversion cable ($38.95.)

What should I do?

—G.T., Milwaukee

A. It is silly to spend $60 on an HDMI adapter for an obsolete DVD player, or even $39 for a special connection cable when you can get a new Blu-ray player or DVD player with HDMI for around the same amount or less.

A new Sony Blu-ray player (which plays DVDs as well as high-definition Blu-ray movies) is under $75. This is what you should be looking to buy, at a minimum. As I detailed in a recent column, DVD resolution is only 5% that of a 4K television. Blu-ray is a much better match to your television’s potential image quality.

Even if you do not buy a Blu-ray player, an upconverting DVD player with HDMI is $35, less than the cost of the Sony cable. HDMI adapters are cumbersome and can be unreliable. Best to avoid them when possible.

Hanasco toothbrush is back: This one will make a lot of readers happy because I sure received a lot of emails about it! The Hanasco sonic electric toothbrush package with travel case and eight brush heads is back in stock on Amazon. The price when I wrote this was $34.99, a few dollars more than the last time but still a great deal on a nice toothbrush with enough brush heads to last at least two years. The pink version of the toothbrush with three brush heads and charging stand (the charging stand is not included in the black version) is also back in stock for $27.99.

My recent columns about personal care products have been extremely popular. I will have more neat products to share soon, stay tuned!

SEC Network
Radio: FloridaGators.com
Live Stats: Sidearm
Game Notes: Florida | Missouri

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida women's basketball will honor it's four seniors on Sunday afternoon as the Gators welcome Missouri to Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center for their final regular season contest.

The game, scheduled to tip at noon ET, will be streamed live on SEC Network with Richard Cross and Nicki Fargas on the call while Kyle Crooks and Brittany Davis will handle radio responsibilities on 98.1FM/850AM WRUF.

SENIOR DAY
Zippy Broughton, Emanuely de Oliveira, Kristina Moore and Kiara Smith will all be honored pregame during the senior ceremony for their contributions. The four seniors helped the Gators earned their first 20-win season since the 2015-16 season, as well as winning 10 SEC games for just the fourth time in program history.

THE SERIES
Missouri and Florida have met 11 times in program history, with the Tigers owning a 9-2 series advantage. At home, the Orange & Blue own a 1-3 record while picking up their most recent win in the all-time series at Missouri on Feb. 16, 2020, 75-67.

ENDING AT HOME
Over the last decade, the Gators have had mixed results during their regular season home finale, going 4-6 in their last 10 attempts. Florida's last victory to end their home slate came on Feb. 26, 2017 against Georgia, 65-58.

HISTORY BREWING
The Gators have a chance to earn their 11th conference victory on Sunday against the Tigers. With a victory, the Gators would tie the most SEC victories in program history and reach 11 SEC wins for just the second time as a program.

MOVIN' ON UP
After entering the top 25 for the first time since the 2015-16 season two weeks ago, the Gators continue to climb in the rankings, coming in at No. 15 in the AP poll and #21 in the Coaches poll this week. The appearance at No. 15 marks the highest ranking for the Gators since the 2008-09 season.

NAISMITH WATCHLIST
After a 20-6 (10-3 SEC) start for the Gators to the season, Kelly Rae Finley was named one of 15 finalists for the Naismith Coach of the Year Award. She joins Dawn Staley, Kim Mulkey and Kellie Harper as a representative from the SEC.

ELITE DEFENDER
Kiara Smith's defense has risen to an elite level during the 2021-22 season, sitting at 22nd nationally with a total of 69 steals on the year. She is also ranked 42nd in the nation in steals per game, averaging 2.46 during each outing. Those numbers are good for third and fourth in the SEC, respectively.

SMITH IN THE RECORD BOOK
Points - 14th, 1,486
Games Started - 6th, 114
Consecutive Starts - 3rd, 104
Minutes - 3rd, 4029
Free Throws Made - T5th, 334
Assists - 6th, 427
Steals - 5th, 217

20 WINS
Florida boasts 20 victories for the first time since the 2015-16 campaign when they ended 22-9. It is the fastest UF reached 20 wins since starting 20-2 during the 2008-09 season.

CONFERENCE FUN
After defeating Arkansas, Florida earned their 10th conference win of the season, marking the earliest the Gators have reached 10 wins in the SEC since the 2000-01 season when they began 10-3 in the league. Florida has also now won 10 SEC games for just the fourth time in program history. The last time UF won 10 conference matchups came during a 10-6 season in 2015-16. Six of Florida's wins have come on the road in SEC play, the most road-SEC wins for the Gators since the 2000-01 season.

FACING THE GIANTS
The Gators are now one of just ten teams in the nation to have defeated at least five top 25 teams. They join South Carolina, Michigan, Louisville, North Carolina State, Stanford and Tennessee as the only teams to have accomplished that feat.

Man United's control doesn't lead to goals vs. Watford as their grip on top four weakens - ESPN

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com

MANCHESTER, England -- Manchester United ended their game against Watford on Saturday with Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Anthony Elanga on the pitch and still couldn't find a goal.

The 0-0 draw at Old Trafford dented their hopes of a top-four finish, particularly ahead of a run of league games against Manchester City, Tottenham and Liverpool in the next three weeks. United manager Ralf Rangnick was left to answer questions about how his team had managed to have 22 shots at goal and hit the target only three times, but it was one of those occasions when it was nothing to do with him.

- Report: Man United rue missed chances in draw vs. Watford

United played well from start to finish, but Ronaldo, Fernandes and Elanga all missed golden chances. Ronaldo squandered the best after just five minutes when he twisted in the penalty area and hit the post when he should have scored. Over the 85 minutes that followed, the Portuguese forward -- a scorer of more than 800 goals during a remarkable career -- looked like a shadow of the player United supporters hoped had arrived from Juventus last summer. It's now one goal in 10 for the 37-year-old.

"It feels once again like two points dropped we should have easily won," said Rangnick afterward. "We did everything apart from scoring, we had enough chances in both halves to win that game, but we didn't and, not for the first time, we dropped two points in a very important game."

The last time United played Watford, they lost 4-1 at Vicarage Road and it cost Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his job. There have been changes since under Rangnick's guidance, but while they are more organised and better defensively, scoring goals is a problem.

In 17 games under the 63-year-old German manager, United have scored two or more just five times. They needed only one against Watford, but after 93 minutes of wasted chances, Ben Foster, at 38 years and 329 days, had become the oldest visiting goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet at Old Trafford. For context, Watford, 19th in the table, have the third-worst defensive record in the league behind only Leeds United and Norwich, and on Wednesday, they were soundly beaten 4-1 at home by Crystal Palace.

"We had enough chances. In the first half we had four clear opportunities that normally are enough to score at least one or two goals, and second-half was similar," added Rangnick. "In the end it's about efficiency, being clinical in front of goal, and this is not for the first time, unfortunately.

"Apart from that we were in full control of the game, we dominated the game. In the last five minutes, they had one or two transitional moments, and apart from that we dominated the game completely."

The frustration for Rangnick will be that there was lots to like about United's performance, but without a goal, it means little. He wants his teams to control games, and he got that on Saturday. He likes clean sheets and got that too: This is the first time United have kept consecutive home clean sheets in the league since 2020. Rangnick remains convinced his football is attacking enough to win games, and it was telling afterward that he appeared to place the blame for the result against Watford at the feet of the players rather than a failure of the game plan.

"Our job as coaches and head coaches is to help the team create enough chances," said Rangnick pointedly. "If we only had two or three opportunities in the game, we could ask ourselves what can we do to create more, but the number of clear chances we had today have to be enough to win a game like this."

United should have been home and hosed after just 20 minutes. After Ronaldo hit the post with the best chance of the game early on, Fernandes had a shot saved by Foster after being played in by Elanga, and Ronaldo had a goal ruled out for offside and Fernandes prodded wide after a inviting cross from the left by Pogba.

Watford manager Roy Hodgson, twice a winner at Old Trafford as manager of Crystal Palace, said damningly that the way his team had defended "was not rocket science."

It says everything about the form of United's attacking players that 19-year-old Elanga was their best player by a distance, and if a few others had shown the youngster's movement and urgency, Rangnick may well have ended the afternoon talking about a vital victory in the race for Champions League football. Instead, the interim coach would be forgiven for looking nervously at the fixture list.

United play Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium next weekend before a home game against Tottenham on March 12 and a trip to Anfield to face Liverpool on Mar. 20. Rangnick's team sit fourth although Arsenal, two points behind, and with three games in hand, will feel it's in their hands. United cannot afford many more missed opportunities.

Go 'Inside Sound United' for In-Depth Training on HEOS Wireless System & Leading Audio Brands - CEPro

Consumer audio has been booming over the past two years and with so many brands in their arsenal, Sound United dealers have a unique opportunity. They can present customers everything from high-resolution wireless audio to high-performance stereo to multichannel home theater using HEOS, Bowers & Wilkins, Denon, Marantz, Polk Audio, Classé and Definitive Technology.

That’s a wide range of audiophile budgets that can be easily served … as well as a lot of technology for integrators to gain expertise in all the possibilities.

Inside Sound United Trainings Deliver Deep Dives into Brands

To get installers up to speed on the latest products, features and unique technologies of their brands, Sound United invested in creating “Inside Sound United” as a helpful tool. The on-demand video series delivers the convenience that installers have come to expect from online training during the pandemic – particularly beneficial for onboarding new techs these days – augmented by studio-quality video production and keen insights from the company’s brand experts.

Integrators will also find focused episodes in one place by visiting the Inside Sound United training hub covering:

  • Denon and Marantz CI Solutions, which outlines specific custom install-friendly features that aid in the integration of their audio solutions, as well as upgrades, new products and support for HDMI 2.1 to optimize system design & installation
  • Polk’s Reserve Lineup, which walks through the features and unique technologies that separate Polk and its half-century heritage, spotlighted by the design team including director of audio and acoustic solutions Scott Orth, and explores Sound United’s vaunted Audio and Acoustics Research and Development (ARAD) facility
  • Definitive Technology Products, in which members of the engineering team including renowned product designer Matt Lyons detail exclusive technologies that differentiate Def Tech products, and also delves into the ARAD facility
  • Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series Diamond, which showcases the acclaimed speaker company’s flagship series’ fourth-generation version attributes and enhancements, and even offers first-hand anecdotes from Grammy-winning engineer John Newton of Soundmirror and his personal experience with the speakers
  • HEOS Wireless Multiroom Solutions, which helps with best practices for overcoming installation challenges, building a robust network to support high-res wireless audio and other tips.

HEOS Ecosystem Serves Up Buffet of High-Res Options

Within the surging consumer audio sector, wireless solutions have become increasingly popular – especially as systems provide higher-quality wireless music and even enable dealers to extend audio zones outdoors. HEOS solutions can provide an ideal fit, and also represent a way to upsell and expand projects for more high-resolution audio.

I wanted to learn more about the platform and glean some insights into what integrators can expect to find in the Inside Sound United series. So let’s take a glimpse of the HEOS video as an example, which offered many practical and perhaps even some surprising tips as dealers familiarize themselves with the system.

“Back in the day, if you wanted to distribute music from room to room to room it could be very expensive and very complex. And, if you wanted to use streaming services, the quality was not very good,” notes Phil Jones, Sound United director of global brand activation, in the HEOS training video. “Now, you do not have to sacrifice performance for convenience.”

He adds that the breadth of potential system design options for HEOS ecosystem encompasses AV receivers, network audio players, speakers and soundbars. It’s a buffet of high-res choices to satiate customers’ whole-house audio appetites, regardless of room or environment.

Installers can employ that ecosystem to enable consumers to find pretty much any song instantly, in CD quality or above, while listening in any room – up to 32 zones for even the largest jobs. Jones cites the Sound United facility as a prime example, even though it’s more of a resimercial design with a whopping 16-zone HEOS system routing music to 77 speakers and 22 subwoofers, controllable via his phone.

“So if we can control multiple zones in a 100,000-square-foot engineering facility or sales & marketing facility, we can easily provide you with a great experience in a customer’s home,” he explains.

Sound United HEOS dealer training series
In addition to new Denon Home wireless speakers, Sound United’s HEOS platform can be found in Denon and Marantz components.

The platform comes baked into Denon and Marantz AVRs, but for those looking for an even simpler solution, he points to the new Denon Home wireless speaker family that comes in three models (150, 250 and 350) plus the Denon Home 550 soundbar and serves up the HEOS capabilities. Also, the power supplies are built in, so there aren’t any wall-wart worries.

Various HEOS Installation Scenarios Explained

Dealers can show customers just how simple selecting music can get by using the devices’ six presets to go straight to a favorite streaming station or playlist at the touch of a button or even voice command. Music can be sent to play in multiple rooms simultaneously – perfectly synced – if integrators group certain zones together too.

Jones adds that a practical multizone upsell is to cover a large room with multiple HEOS-embedded speakers, in case customers think blasting one at the front of a room will suffice. Depending on where speakers are installed, sound quality can be further dialed in using a “Speaker Placement” feature setting on the HEOS app.

Another scenario could be to pair the speakers an AVR so one room can have a full theater multichannel experience, while other rooms in a house can have the audio downmixed to stereo, for instance if a big game is on.

The latest U26 software update brings more modern aesthetics and functionalities to customers’ HEOS app experience. “It now has a newer, lighter, more modern feel,” Jones says, adding that HEOS products incorporating microphones can also now be used for Amazon Alexa controls – for other Alexa-supported devices beyond audio too such as lights, door locks and thermostats (and to alleviate privacy concerns, it’s an opt-in feature to turn on and input Amazon account info before mics are activated).

To maximize performance and coverage of systems, Jones delves into the network side of things with advice limiting potential network traffic interference, types of routers to deploy, adding access points and more. Again, the HEOS app can assist setup with a feature that shows signal strength of each connected device, for instance.

Going more in depth, Jones enlists Sound United colleagues Nick Murrells, technical category director (IoT & HEOS) and Mike Magzanian, AV systems engineer, to provide more detailed insights by answering questions on how the HEOS ecosystem is expanding and improving; accessing dedicated technical support for dealers and installers; optimizing specific streaming service functionalities (like MQA with TIDAL); enhancing wireless network robustness; and much more.

Given that the questions were supplied by dealers and installers, it’s good reason to check out the full hourlong video on the Inside Sound United hub or at its YouTube channel.

Sound Transit names Brooke Belman as acting CEO following departure of Rogoff - Mass Transit Magazine

The Sound Transit Board appointed Brooke Belman to serve as acting CEO of the agency following the departure of Peter Rogoff on May 31. The agency has started a national search for a permanent candidate and calls Belman a longtime agency leader, who will be tasked with carrying the agency through the transition.

“Sound Transit will not miss a beat as Brooke steps forward to lead during the final phase of our CEO search,” said Sound Transit Board Chair Kent Keel, a member of the University Place City Council. “Brooke brings seasoned leadership, deep knowledge of Sound Transit’s work and a strong commitment to our riders and the public as we advance the nation’s largest transit expansion.”

Upon the arrival of a permanent CEO, Belman will return to her current role as the agency’s chief of staff. Since joining Sound Transit in 2004, Belman’s leadership roles have included deputy executive director, land use planning and development; chief of staff of the design engineering and construction management department; and director of community engagement. Belman previously held consultant roles in communications and politics.

“I am honored to serve the board and our dedicated staff during this transition. There is no shortage of important and exciting work at Sound Transit, and I am thrilled to partner with our leadership to deliver on our promise to the Puget Sound region,” said Belman.

A subcommittee of the Sound Transit Board of Directors chaired by Keel is leading the national search for a new CEO to succeed Rogoff. The position is currently advertised, and this spring, the subcommittee is scheduled to identify finalists who will be considered by the full board.

Four Bombers Qualify for NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships - Ithaca College Athletics

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com
ITHACA, N.Y. – Four members of the Ithaca College men's swimming and diving team have qualified for the 2022 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. Jack Wadsworth, Stanley Zaneski and Jack Wadsworth will each compete in individual events, while Ben Young will join the trio to compete in four separate relay competitions.

Fresh off being named the Liberty League Swimmer of the Meet, Jack Wadsworth has had an outstanding debut season for the Bombers and has qualified to compete in the 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke and 400-yard IM. Wadsworth didn't officially compete in the 100-yard backstroke event at the Liberty League Championships, instead he qualified on a blazing Timed Trial Final where he swam an NCAA B-cut and personal best time of 47.34, which also broke an association and men's program record. In the 200-yard backstroke, he crushed the Liberty League competition by winning the event with an NCAA B-cut time of 1:44.95. The final individual event that Wadsworth qualified for was the 400-yard individual medley. He won the 400-yard individual medley in a meet, association, school and pool record time of 3:51.34. Wadsworth is seeded second in a field of 24 swimmers within the event.

Graduate freestyler Stanley Zaneski will be looking forward to competing at the NCAA Championships for the first-time in his prolific career as he will be competing in both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles. Zaneski qualified for the 50-yard freestyle at the Liberty League Championships, touching the wall with an NCAA B-cut time of 20.61 in the prelims. He followed that up with a second-place finish with a time of 20.55, which represented a personal-best. Zaneski is also seeded 19th of 58 swimmers competing in the 100-yard freestyle after recording an explosive relay leadoff time of 44.71, which was an association, Liberty League championship and new team record.

It was an outstanding debut season for James Collishaw and for his outstanding performances at the Liberty League Championships he was named Rookie Swimmer of the Meet. He has qualified to compete in both the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events at the NCAA Championships. He qualified for the 50-yard freestyle by just edging out Stanley Zaneski with a winning time of 20.52 seconds. On the final day of the meet, James Collishaw once again outdueled Stanley Zaneski to win the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 44.99, which has him seeded 32nd out of 58 invited swimmers.

The quartet of Jack Wadsworth, Stanley Zaneski, James Collishaw and Ben Young also qualified to compete together in the 200-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard freestyle relay, 800-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard medley relay.

The NCAA Championships are being held March 15-19 with Franklin College and Indiana Sports Corp serving as the hosts. All events will take place at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI in Indianapolis.

Will Arsenal finish top four? Schedule, how long Gunners have been out of Champions League and more - Sporting News

suaralifestyle.blogspot.com

With a pair of resilient, ground-out wins over Wolves in February, Arsenal have firmly cemented themselves as contenders for finishing in the top four this season.

For a long time, Champions League football was a given at Emirates Stadium, but since Arsene Wenger's final campaign, that hasn't been the case.

This season, however, Arsenal are back in the conversation. Somewhat unexpectedly, after a stuttering start to the season, Arsenal are two points off 4th place with two games in hand, and Mikel Arteta's young side seem to growing in confidence on a weekly basis.

While there are almost certainly still twists and turns to come in the race for the Champions League places, Mikel Arteta's team look to be in a slightly stronger situation than fellow contenders Manchester United, Tottenham and West Ham.

Will Arsenal finish in the top four? Who do they still have to play?

Arsenal look to be in the driving seat in the race for fourth spot, with two games in hand. However, those two games are away to fierce local rivals Tottenham and Chelsea, where nothing can be taken for granted.

There's also the factor of considering what their opponents have to play for. In theory, the run of mid-table sides such as Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Brighton and Southampton should provide a great opportunity for momentum. But closing out the season against three teams fighting for their Premier League survival - Leeds, Newcastle and Everton - could be a concern.

35 Sun, May 15 A Newcastle 10:00 a.m.
36 Sun, May 22 H Everton 11:00 a.m.

In the last two seasons, Chelsea finished 4th with 67 points and 66 points. Prior to that, in 2018/19, Tottenham needed a higher tally of 71 points to get a Champions League spot. In 2017/18 and 2016/17, Liverpool finished 4th with 75 points and 76 points, respectively.

So, as the competition in the top half of the table becomes greater, the points totals of the top-four contenders are naturally trending downwards. If Arsenal continued with their current points-per-game trajectory, they would end the campaign on a healthy 71 points.

Mikel-Arteta-120221-Getty.jpg

When was the last time Arsenal were in the Champions League?

In the heyday of Wenger, Champions League football was less a goal and more an expectation. The French icon infamously likened the achievement of a top-four finish to a trophy.

However, he fell short in his penultimate season, of 2016/17. That was the last season in which Arsenal played in Europe's top competition.

Although the Gunners lifted the FA Cup that season, they fell short in the league by agonizingly finishing one point behind 4th-placed Liverpool. Arsenal were also infamously beaten 10-2 on aggregate by Bayern Munich in the Champions League round of 16.

The following season was Wenger's last, with Arsenal way off the pace, 12 points behind Liverpool. He nearly salvaged a Champions League spot via the Europa League, but suffered a painful semi-final loss to Atletico Madrid.

Unai Emery came in and again finished a point short of qualification. He also lost a Europa League final, 4-1 to Chelsea.

Mikel Arteta has been 10 and six points off in his two seasons in charge, while exiting the Europa League at the round-of-32 and semi-final stages.

Unai Emery

Arsenal's record in the Champions League

Arsenal qualified for the Champions League in 19 successive seasons under Wenger. During that time, they reached just one final - which ended in a 2-1 defeat to Barcelona in 2005/06.

They made the semi-finals once, but were blown away by a Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired Manchester United in 2008/09. Four quarter-final exits were the next closest they came.

Despite Wenger's enormous success in revolutionizing English football, his record in European competition will forever be a sore point for Arsenal fans, who never quite saw their team fulfil their world-beating potential.

Arsene Wenger FC Arsenal FC Barcelona Champions League 02232016

Why Arsenal qualifying for the Champions League is important

Arsenal have made big efforts in the last couple of seasons to trim their wage bill. They had, what CEO VInai Venkatesham described as, "a Champions League squad on a Europa League wage bill."

With the club taking a longer-term approach, and trusting Mikel Arteta with more responsibility, the benefit of Champions League football at this stage in the cycle would be massive.

Firstly, it would be a real vindication of the trust that has been shown in the Spanish coach. Secondly, the increase in revenue, from broadcast and matchday income, would be substantial, and only add to the financial backing that KSE have committed to Arteta's rebuild.

MORE: Champions League round-of-16 power rankings

While the goal for this season would have been to finish in the top six, and achieve at least Europa League football, bypassing that step and heading straight into the Champions League would be a boost from a footballing point of view. The travel and scheduling of the Europa League can be a real drag on a team.

In addition, the prestige that comes with competing in Europe's elite club competition will play an important part in attracting top-level players to the club. With Arsenal desperately needing to strength in midfield and up front in the summer, the prospect of Champions League football will make the Emirates that much more appealing a destination.
