Leading Off
The Kennesaw State softball team opens the home portion of the 2022 season on Friday, Feb. 18 for a doubleheader against the Samford Bulldogs. The Owls return the favor on Sunday, Feb. 20 for a road doubleheader against the Bulldogs in Birmingham, Ala.
Admission is free for both KSU home games on Friday, Feb. 18, and a limited number of 2022 KSU softball schedule posters will be given out at the gate.
KSU enters this weekend after posting a 2-2 record in Tallahassee, Fla. for the JoAnne Graf Classic. The Owls secured wins over Loyola-Chicago (8-5) and in-state foe Mercer (11-3) in the challenge.
Weekend Storylines
>> Kiera Cooper enters the weekend with a hit in every game so far this season and holds a team-best .545 batting average.
>> Taylor Cates leads the team with four extra-base hits in 2022 including two home runs.
>> Newcomers Mary Greg Anderson and Madison Miller lead the team with two stolen bases each this season.
>> Laura Bishop leads the Owl pitching staff with a 3.00 ERA and has only allowed six hits in 25 opposing plate appearances.
>> Freshmen Ty Hardeman (shortstop), Madison Miller (left field/designated hitter) and Bella Galloway (second base) have gotten the start in every game this season.
Series History
The Owls enter this weekend with a 9-0 record all-time against the Samford Bulldogs. The two teams last met on March 29, 2017 where the Owls secured a 9-1 victory in Birmingham. KSU is 5-0 at home and 4-0 on the road against the Bulldogs.
ASUN Rising
The Owls enter 2022 after reaching the ASUN tournament championship game a season ago. KSU was picked to finish second in the conference by coaches from the conference. Taylor Cates, Brinaya Bailey and Melanie Bennett were named to the preseason ASUN All-Conference team.
2021 Rewind
Head coach Tripp MacKay leads the squad after closing out the 2021 campaign in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional, where the program earned its first victory in a Division I NCAA tournament game, defeating the Auburn Tigers 1-0. The Owls also dominated in the ASUN tournament, making it all the way to the ASUN championship game against the Liberty Flames.
On Deck
The Owls will return home on Friday, Feb. 25 through Sunday, Feb. 27 for the I-75 Challenge. KSU will welcome East Tennessee State, Georgia State and Penn State to Bailey Park for two games against each squad.
