Corvallis High School presents 'The Sound of Music,' April 7-9 - Ravalli Republic

The Bitterroot mountains will ring with song when the Corvallis High School Performing Arts Department presents "The Sound of Music," April 7, 8 and 9.

The group has been looking forward to the return of live theater for two years after the COVID-19 pandemic shut down Montana schools the week before the club had the chance to perform their previous musical.

Director Doug McConnaha and Musical Director Heidi Schnarr decided that the classic story of the von Trapp family’s escape from Austria at the start of WWII would be an uplifting start to the return of live performance.

“The show has been an audience favorite for decades,” McConnaha said. “The students have been asking us since school started last fall if we were going to do a musical this year and we felt that this show would be perfect.”

Musical Director Heidi Schnarr agreed.

"We have a very enthusiastic cast, including some fifth graders playing the parts of younger children,” she said. “I encourage everyone to come and listen to this classic, you won't be disappointed."

The cast for "The Sound of Music" is Zoe Roberts (Maria Rainer), Athen Gladwin (Captain Georg von Trapp), Jacob Nelson (Max Detweiller), Ella Child (Elsa Schrader), Lilly Trail (Mother Abbess), Trinity Shippy (Sister Berthe), Ava Leopold (Sister Margaretta), Skylar Tibbs (Sister Sophia), Sam Chavez (Franz), Ava Leopold (Frau Schmidt), Sam Chavez (Herr Zeller), Corbin Kirkland (Rolf Gruber), Inga Watt (Liesl von Trapp), Gabe Stroud (Friedrich von Trapp), Nikki Jessop (Louisa von Trapp), David Smith (Kurt von Trapp), Kailee Martin (Brigitta von Trapp), Ashlynn Drake (Marta von Trapp), Hope Jessop (Gretl von Trapp), Shyann Skinner and Samantha Skinner (nuns).

The crew for "The Sound of Music" is Doug McConnaha (director), Heidi Schnarr (musical director), Paige Hollar (stage manager), Isabelle Harvey (costumes/set), Pat Tibbs and Amy Boelman (costume assistants).

Senior Zoe Roberts, who plays Maria, said she appreciates the opportunity to sing in the musical her senior year.

“The cast is full of amazingly talented people and I'm so happy to be a part of this project," Roberts said.

Senior Liliana Trail, portraying Mother Abbess, said, “Being in the musical this year is a blast, I was in the one my sophomore year and had the time of my life. I enjoy the acting and the singing and just overall being on stage and getting this experience.”

Senior Jacob Nelson, Max Detweiller, said the musical has been a fun experience.

“I see it as one of the last chances I’ll have to act with my friends again before graduation,” Nelson said.

Costume Manager Isabelle Harvey said she is excited to work on costumes for the Corvallis production of "The Sound of Music."

“I love working with such talented and passionate people to create something that everyone in the valley can enjoy,” Harvey said. “I have always loved 'The Sound of Music,' so to be able to bring it to life on stage is a dream come true.”

Performances will be at 7 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, April 7, 8 and 9 in the Old Gym. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for students and can be purchased from the high school office at 406-961-3201 or at the door.

"The Sound of Music" is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization. Music by Richard Rodgers, Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, Book By Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse.

The CHS Drama Department thanks the Hamilton Playhouse for costumes, the Corvallis Performing Arts Booster Club for their support and Robert Parr of Parr Sound for providing sound and lights.
