FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball coach Maria Marchesano has announced four additions for the 2022-23 season: Destinee Marshall (Louisville, Ky. / Sacred Heart Academy / Radford), Sydney Graber (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Homestead High School / Central Michigan), Klea Kaci (Mississauga, Ontario / Turner Fenton Secondary School) and Alaina Diaz (Hudsonville, Mich. / Hudsonville High School) will join the Mastodon program this summer.
Marshall is a 5-foot-5 guard that spent two seasons at NCAA Division I Big South member Radford. The dean's list honoree played in 38 games in her two seasons with 17 starts. In her sophomore season, she averaged 6.0 points, 2.3 assists and 1.7 rebounds per game for the Highlanders. She had a career-high 15 points against UNC Asheville and in the rematch with the Bulldogs had a career-high eight assists. She was a member of the Go For Greens Leadership Campaign, the Big South SAAC Committee and Vice President of the Radford SAAC Committee, and a member of the Diversity and Inclusion committee. While at Sacred Heart Academy, she won two letters with the Valkyries. She led them to an 82-20 record while shooting 45 percent from the floor, 34 percent from 3-point range and 70 percent from the charity stripe. Marshall led Sacred Heart to three regional championships, and was honored as a Kentucky All-State in her junior and senior seasons. She was a First Team All-Region selection and Second Team All-State honoree. She played club basketball for F.O.C.U.S. from 2010-14, Kentucky Premier from 2015-19 and Gym Rats in 2020.
"Des brings a great deal of experience of running a team and playing the point guard position at a high level," Marchesano said. "When we saw she was available, we were very excited about building a relationship with her because she has the ability to get downhill and facilitate but can also shoot the ball as well. We were also super high on her leadership qualities and I know she's going to hit the ground running when she arrives on campus."
Graber is a 6-foot-1 forward that graduated from Homestead in 2020. She played two seasons with Central Michigan and was a member of the 2020-21 NCAA Tournament team. The Chippewas won the Mid-American Conference Tournament after upsetting No. 1 seed Bowling Green in the championship. Graber played in more than 30 games in her two-year career with the Chippewas and had a career free throw percentage of 83.3. At Homestead, she earned four letters and served as the team captain for three years. She averaged 15.1 points per game and 8.5 rebounds per game as a senior and was named First Team All-Conference and All-State honors for her efforts. The four-time All-State selection led Homestead to four SAC titles, three sectional championships and a state title. The Indiana Junior and Senior All-Star finished her prep career with 1,154 points and 730 rebounds. Graber was the 2020 Tiffany Gooden award. Prior to her time at Central Michigan, Graber was rated a four-star recruit by ESPN, the No. 51 overall prospect and No. 13 at her position. She was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and played club basketball for Always 100.
"Getting Sydney to come home and join our team was a big day for our program," Marchesano said. "She's a talented forward that can play inside and out. She's got a lot of variety to her offensive game and will fit very well into our systems, and I know the Fort Wayne community is going to love watching her play again."
Kaci is a 5-foot-11 guard that comes from Turner Fenton Secondary School. She played club basketball with Excel Hoops and Juel Oakville Vytis in Ontario. Three of her best games came against Loui Riel, Mississauga and Tri County. Against Loui Riel, she had 25 points, eight steals, seven assists and a block. She had 28 points, six rebounds, five assists, four steals and a block against Mississauga and 22 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and two steals against Tri County. She was named a Third Team All-Star by the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association and picked up a Player of the Week honor while with Juel.
"Kaci is a talented wing who has a flare for the game," Marchesano said. "She's creative, confident, and absolutely eats, sleeps, and lives all things basketball. Her love for the game is a trait you love to see when you're recruiting a kid. Her diverse set of skills combined with her length are going to be fun to watch in a Mastodon uniform."
Diaz is a 5-foot-7 point guard out of Hudsonville High School. She will be a dual-sport athlete at Purdue Fort Wayne, as she will also compete for the women's track and field team. Diaz was a four-year All-Conference selection and was the team defensive MVP for three years. She was also an All-State honoree in 2021 and 2022. She led the Eagles to the state championship in 2021, earning regional, quarterfinal, semifinal and final MVP awards. She was also a 2022 Academic All-State selection. She was the team's leader in steals. On the track and field side, she is the state of Michigan's long jump record holder and Hudsonville High School's record holder in the 100-meter, 200-meter and long jump events.
"One of our goals in this off-season was to become more athletic, and Alaina helps us out tremendously in that department," Marchesano said. "She's an explosive guard with a toughness about her that is going to elevate our team right away."
Marshall, Graber, Kaci and Diaz will join Lauryn Stover and Jaidyn Koerdt, who signed with the Mastodons in November. The six-player signing class will look to improve upon Marchesano's first season with the Mastodons, which featured the most league wins since 2013-14.
