VESTAL, N.Y. - After its second postseason berth in four seasons, Binghamton women's lacrosse has four standouts representing the program in the America East season awards, as released by the conference office Wednesday morning.
Junior attacker Kenna Newman was named Second Team All-Conference to lead the Bearcat honorees. Additionally, Abigail Carroll and Olivia Muscolino were selected to the All-Rookie Team. Senior Sofia Afkham made the AE All-Academic Team.
"I am so proud of these young women and their accomplishments this season so far," head coach Stephanie Allen said. "It is exciting for their dedication and hard work to have earned them this recognition. They are all team-first players and are consistently doing whatever they can for the betterment of the team. The program is lucky to have their level of commitment and competitiveness leading us on and off the field this year."
Newman came into her own this season, sliding into a starting role after being a reserve as a freshman and sophomore. The Horseheads native led Binghamton with 42 points during the regular season. Newman's 17 assists also led the team and her 25 goals was good for second. She ranked fifth in the America East with 1.13 assists per game and had two or more assists on five different occasions.
Carroll has been dynamic in the midfield for BU, contributing a high volume of goals, draw controls and caused turnovers. She led the team with 26 goals during the regular season, including three four-goal performances. She also added 34 draw controls. In the team's postseason clinching win over Vermont, she had three vital caused turnovers.
Muscolino burst on the scene with a highlight goal at Syracuse to kick off the season. She went on to add 23 more goals and eight assists. In early March, she had a three-game stretch with 12 goals, including five in an 18-8 win over Lafayette. Muscolino is third on the team with 24 goals and second on the team with 32 points.
Afkham, a captain, was recognized for contributions in the classroom as well as on the field. A graduate student in Accounting, she boasts a 3.83 GPA (3.8 as an undergraduate). She is a member of the Dean's List, AE Commissioner's List and Binghamton Athletic Director's Honor Roll. On the field she finished fourth in the America East with 71 draw controls. On March 2 against Lafayette, she set a program record with 11.
The Bearcats are prepping for Thursday's tournament semifinal game against Vermont. The contest is set to begin at 6 p.m. at the University at Albany.
