Making history on Mackinac Island
It’s very cool that local Scouts, including girls, from Lapeer County will make history when they become the first co-ed troop to do the flag and service duties at Fort Mackinac on Mackinac Island starting on Memorial Day.

‘Awesome memories’
Congratulations on our local Scouts that will be going to Mackinac Island. What an honor, and awesome memories they will get from their experience on the majestic island.

A new agenda for Lapeer commissioners?
Commissioners Marlana Swindell and Eric Cattane are embarrassing Lapeer in their quest to get rid of Dale Kerbyson (city manager). Their agenda has expanded from opening the door for more marijuana businesses to firing Kerbyson who has run the city very efficiently for nearly 20 years. The public doesn’t want him gone, only they do. Interesting!

Edwards remembered
Imlay City did a great thing to do a living tribute for the late Gerry Edwards when they planted a tree in his honor. Gerry was an exceptional man who did so much for many Lapeer County communities. Every community he served should also plant a tree in his honor.

‘Outstanding’ support of performing arts scene
I think it’s great when The County Press supports the performing arts community in Lapeer County. Putting stories on the front page is outstanding to promote the robust arts activities across the county.

Sheriff’s department ‘needs more money’
The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Dept. needs more money to pay its deputies better, so they don’t keep leaving for better-paying agencies. Also, to attract new officers to the department. I will vote Yes on Aug. 2 if they put it on the agenda.

More money needed to fund county government
The law enforcement millage is absolutely necessary because the county doesn’t have a millage rate to support basic services provided by county government. The expression “You get what you pay for” is totally accurate because county Republicans refuse to assess what’s really needed.

The Senate will vote next week on legislation that would codify abortion rights into federal law as Democrats mount their response to the Supreme Court’s leaked draft decision that would overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling. Democratic leaders, lacking the support needed to change Senate rules and pass an abortion bill on a majority vote, have signaled they intend to take the fight to voters during the campaign leading to the November election. Do you think abortion rights should be left to the states to decide?
