DURHAM – The Duke volleyball program and head coach Jolene Nagel announced the addition of four players to the 2022 squad as Devon Chang, Madison Bryant, Christina Barrow and Sofia Ortega will join the Blue Devils this fall.
DEVON CHANG
Newport Beach, Calif. | UCLA | 5-11 Setter | Graduate
Chang comes to Durham after spending three seasons as a setter at UCLA. She is returning from a season-ending injury and will train with the Blue Devils this summer.
Most recently in the spring of 2021, she saw action in 24 sets and seven matches before her injury. During the spring, she averaged 6.08 assists and 2.04 digs per set while posting two double-doubles. Chang dished a season-high 35 assists against Washington State after picking up a career-high 18 digs at Oregon. In addition to her dishing abilities, Chang is a solid presence at the net and tallied a career-high six blocks (1 solo, 5 assisted) at San Diego in 2018.
During her rookie season in 2018, Chang played in 14 matches and 40 sets where she averaged 8.75 assists and 2.70 digs, adding five aces. She was third on the squad with five double-doubles and dished a career-high 52 assists against San Diego.
Outside of the court, she excels in the classroom as a two-time Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll selection.
"We are thrilled to welcome a veteran of Devon's caliber and character to our program," Nagel said. "I've followed her career since her high school days and have always enjoyed watching her compete. Devon has a great mind for the game and a composure on the court that enables her to deliver the ball so effectively. Her impact in our gym will be immediate. She has incredible character, a long history of success and extensive leadership experience. I am thrilled to have such an exceptional student-athlete as part of our Duke volleyball family and look forward to her arrival in Durham this summer."
MADISON BRYANT
Anderson, S.C. | Tennessee | 5-10 DS/L | Graduate
Bryant comes to Duke after spending three seasons as a defensive specialist/libero at Tennessee. The Vols posted a 20-10 overall record, went 11-7 in conference play and made their 16th appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
As a defensive specialist, she is crucial in facilitating the offense and spearheading the defensive unit as a vocal player. As a junior in 2021, she finished the season with 370 digs as Tennessee finished fourth in the SEC with 1,666 and Bryant ranked 10th with 3.43 digs/set in 108 sets. She owns a career-high 26 digs and 10 assists and recorded her first career double-double with 16 digs and 10 assists against Arkansas (9/26/22).
Her sophomore season brought great success as she ranked second in the conference with 3.85 digs/set, which was the eighth-highest single-season average for Tennessee in the 25-point rally-scoring era.
Outside of volleyball, she is a three-time SEC Honor Roll selection.
"We're excited to have the opportunity to work with Madison," Nagel said. "We have enjoyed working with our graduate students and they have brought us experience and maturity to our team. We will benefit from her experience competing in the SEC as a libero. We look for her serve receive, ball control and reading abilities on defense to enhance our sideout and transition game."
CHRISTINA BARROW
Fayetteville, Ga. | Eagle's Landing Christian Academy | 5-8 Setter/DS | Freshman
Barrow joins the Blue Devil program from Fayetteville, Ga., where she attended Eagle's Landing Christian Academy and played for the Rio Volleyball Club.
She was selected All-State following this season (2021-22), All-Area (2018-22) and set her school's assist record with 3,293 assists.
Outside of volleyball, Barrow was highly involved in the Student Government Association (SGA) holding multiple roles, was the editor of her yearbook and was on the Diversity Council Board.
"Christina is a strong athlete who as a setter also plays great defense," Nagel said. "Christina leads with a 'business-like' effort while having a very calm court demeanor."
SOFIA ORTEGA
Miami, Fla. | Northwest Guilford High School | 5-8 DS | Freshman
Sofia Ortega is a defensive specialist who played club with NC Volleyball Academy. She was named the 2018 and 2019 All-Miami Dade Award winner, conference freshman (2018), All-Conference first team (2020 and 2021) and qualified for 18 Nationals this spring. She also lettered one year in lacrosse as a midfielder.
She was part of Duke TIP (Talent Identification Program), a member of the National Honor Society, President of Future Business Leaders of America and Vice President of the Hispanic Student Association.
"Sofia is a solid defensive player who plays with great determination and focus," Nagel said. "She will bring energy and intensity to the court and push a fast pace."
These four Blue Devils will join Duke's incoming class that includes Taylor Atkinson, Kerry Keefe, Millie Muir and Sydney Tomlak. Nagel's incoming class earned a ranking of No. 16 in the nation by Prep Volleyball.
