GRAND RAPIDS, MI— A special immersive light and sound show from Europe is one of the ArtPrize 2022 entries drawing attention in downtown Grand Rapids.
“FUSION,” the time-based piece that has been mesmerizing crowds during the interactive art competition is on display at Celebration Cinema Studio Park,123 Ionia Ave. SW.
The entry from artist duo, cc2, comprised of visual artist, Caren Mueller, and sound producer, Christian Markwart, aims to shine a light on advances in nuclear fusion as Europeans grapple with an energy crisis.
Mueller and Markwart came from Berlin, Germany after a Grand Rapids friend told them about ArtPrize. This is their first time visiting the state.
The 18-day interactive art competition touts 750 works of art displayed in 150 venues across the city. The event, which kicked off Sept. 15, runs through Oct. 2. The artists are vying for a share of $250,000 in prize money.

“What we want to achieve is the feeling that you stay inside the experiments, that you get an emotional interest of what is fusion and what it is about because we as artists want to put attention to this topic. Because we think this could save the energy problem worldwide,” Mueller said.
The near 360-degree environment and a first-class sound system makes Studio Park the perfect canvas for their piece, Markwart said. The modern amphitheater envelops the audience in atmospheric frequencies of light and sound.
The sounds and lights are created from data and 3D models of experiments from the Max-Planck-Institut (IPP) in Berlin. The artist duo takes the data and run it through special programs that create the sounds and visuals.
“I compose harmonic noise, partly it is very atmospheric, partly it is a little intense because in a nuclear reactor you have hundred-million-degrees so it should be a little intense,” Markwart said.
The visuals are then projected onto the surrounding environment using three 30,000 lumen projectors for the audience to see. The b-directional process means the sound guides the light then it flips and the light guides the sound.
The artists have held a variety of site-specific immersive shows around the world.
People still have two more chances to catch a showing of “FUSION.” They do suggest that people get their early to get a seat on the lawn or some of the nearby benches. You can find more information on their Facebook event page.
