ODOT eyeing Fairview Park sound wall project along I-480 - cleveland.com

FAIRVIEW PARK, Ohio -- The sound of the freeway hum has become a familiar soundtrack to Fairview Park residents living along I-480.

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is now in the process of planning muffled relief along the busy highway.

“The city of Fairview Park submitted an application for noise barriers in August 2019,” ODOT District 12 Public Information Officer Brent Kovacs said.

“ODOT performed a noise analysis that concluded noise barriers were justified in accordance with federal criteria for two areas in Fairview Park along I-480. We’ll be constructing a noise wall that is designed to reduce the highway noise for the residents next to the wall.”

Fairview Park Mayor Patrick Cooney said residents are excited about the future installation of the noise barriers.

“The walls are needed to offset the noise that people are experiencing near their residences,” he said.

“This wall will have a positive impact on the health and welfare of the residents by reducing the noise and other exposures from the highway.”

ODOT’s average daily traffic count for that area of I-480 includes 105,000 vehicles.

Earlier this month, ODOT collected soil samples through borings along Maple Drive from W. 227 Street to the cul-de-sac. The investigations are necessary for the design work to be completed for the sound wall project.

Estimated at $2.1 million, the current project on the north side of I-480 includes barrier 1 between Clague Road and W. 227th Street, as well as barrier 2 between W. 227th Street and W. 220th Street.

On the south side of I-480, the proposed barrier 5 will run approximately 300 feet east and west of the cul-de-sac on W. 224th Street.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026.

“We appreciate the residents working with the city to reach out to ODOT by completing surveys, sharing their concerns about the noise and following up with them on other inquiries about the project,” Cooney said.

“Also, we’re grateful for the continued partnership with ODOT in addressing the needs of Fairview Park and working on a solution that will benefit our current and future residents.”
