The sound from Metallica's set at Download Festival - which boomed across a 15-mile radius last night (Thursday, June 8) - could be the result of their new "gargantuan" sound system. A press release published by Meyer Sound on Wednesday (June 7) explains that the groundbreaking new production comprises a staggering 288 loudspeakers in an attempt by Metallica's creative director Dan Braun to "immerse the entire audience".
The music was heard as far away as West Hallam last night with some people saying they enjoyed hearing it and others complaining that it was too loud for a school night. Reports of the noise came in from almost everywhere in the city and beyond, including Sinfin, Mickleover and Allestree.
Incredibly, some people in Castle Donington just a few hundred metres from the stage said they couldn't hear it. But with the stage facing north, and with the addition of fairly strong winds, the sound carried some 15 miles from its source. Now, more light has been shed on why. Dan Braun said: "The clarity of the system is breathtaking, and that combined with Bob McCarthy’s brilliant design is giving us a show that sounds spectacular.
"I told Meyer Sound that my goal was to have full stereo sound at every point with no overlap, from the centre pit to the nosebleed seats. We wanted everybody to hear the band as if with nearfield monitors, and I think we’ve come closer to that than ever before in a concert setting.”

Metallica's world tour coincides with the release of their new album, 72 Seasons, and will go on for a staggering two years. They're playing two shows of completely different sets in every location.
The good news for those who aren't fans of heavy rock is that it may not be as loud for Bring Me The Horizon tonight (Friday), or Slipknot on Sunday (June 11). The band will retake the stage on Saturday night though for the second of their headline performances.
Meyer Sound's press release describes the scale of the new audio design. "The sonic field has been expanded to ensure a wide stereo spread of guitars and drums at every seat and standing point in the stadium," it says.
As an intro to their famous hit One, the band employed the sound of the "rumble and roar of a four-engine vintage bomber circling the stadium with convincing reality". Greg Price, who's responsible for controlling the band's live sound, said: “We had some people outside wondering if there was a real plane flying around in the stadium."
