WMU grad scores Tony Award nomination for sound design in a Christmas Carol - WWMT-TV

This Sunday marks the annual Tony Awards!

This year, West Michigan is well represented with one of the nominees being a Western Michigan University graduate.

Joshua Reid is nominated for his work in sound design for the play, "A Christmas Carol."

Reid said his time at WMU directly impact his success today.

“One of the biggest things that I’ve learned at Western was that the ideas come first and the tools and technology come second and so, apply that to theatre," Reid said. "It’s allowed me to be creative and think about what the production needs. What the audience will respond to. What the actors will respond to and then think about the technology as a tool to execute those ideas and kind of bring them to life."

Reid is up against some strong competition in the sound design category with the likes of "Life of Pi" sound designer Carolyn Downing and Ben and Max Ringham, who are actually nominated twice in the category for their work on "A Doll's House" and "Prima Facie."

Reid said he's proud of his work despite whatever happens Sunday.

“I will still be ecstatic at the work we’ve already done and the people that have brought this production," he said. "The people who have supported me the entire way who have supported and grown with me over the years. All of those people will still be coming to mind as if my name was being called in the first place.”

He urged West Michigan to support its theatrical community.

“Specifically to the Kalamazoo community, the arts community in Kalamazoo is extremely vibrant," he said. “I think supporting that community now more than ever is really critical in developing the next generation on theatrical artist that are going to end up running Broadway, running their communities and using those skills to develop their own environments.”

The Bronco Nation is well represented in the Big Apple as seven Western Michigan University alumni were nominated for Tony awards:

  • Crystal Lucas-Perry: Best Actress in a Featured Role for the Broadway show “Ain’t No Mo’”
  • Darren Johnston: His production company No Guarantees were nominated for Best Play,
  • Brian Martin: Performing in ensemble of Best Musical nominee "Some Like It Hot."
  • Jeffrey Fauver and D.J. Potts: Publicist and associate sound designer for Best New Play nominee "Fat Ham."
  • Tyler Siems: Company manager for Best New Musical nominee "Kimberly Akimbo."
