The spiny dogfish shares many similarities to the smooth dogfish in that the species typically feeds on crustaceans at the bottom of the ocean. It has two spines, and when threatened, can arch its back in order to secrete venom into a predator, according to Oceana. Spiny dogfish have sharp teeth as well, but they are not considered a threat to humans.
Female spiny dogfish have a gestation period of 18 to 24 months, which is one of the longest gestation periods for any animal with a vertebrae, according to Oceana.
Like with the smooth dogfish, catching spiny dogfish does not require a speciality license. There is also no minimum length or creel limit for catching this shark.
