SOUND OF FREEDOM Defies Hollywood, Adds Showings in Fourth Week
By Movieguide® Contributor
SOUND OF FREEDOM will hit more theaters for the fourth consecutive week as its box office take exceeds $130 million.
“Everyone in the industry knows that films are generally supposed to lose screens week-over-week, not add them. And yet, the incredible word-of-mouth driving SOUND OF FREEDOM continues to spread. In response, we are continuing to expand our offering in theaters this weekend,” Brandon Purdie, Angel Studios Head of Theatrical, said in a statement. “Our theatrical partners have stepped up in a huge way to allow for more people to see the film.”
This marks the fourth consecutive weekend that Angel Studios increased the number of theaters the movie will hit. It will reach 3,411 theaters, up from the initial 2,634 in its first weekend.
SOUND OF FREEDOM is even beating movies from major studios. According to MovieWeb, DC’s THE FLASH has made $107.5 million at the domestic box office — $22.5 million less than SOUND OF FREEDOM.
The movie’s popularity reflects the increased success of content with Biblical and moral themes, like THE CHOSEN and JESUS REVOLUTION.
“It’s a phenomenon. Jesus Revolution 2.0 could be happening,” Greg Laurie told Newsweek. “This is a moment in time when pop culture really needs Jesus.”
SOUND OF FREEDOM’s popularity in the U.S. has led to global distribution for the movie. According to Angel Studio’s Instagram, SOUND OF FREEDOM will be released in South Africa, Australia, Mexico, the UK, Spain and many other countries throughout August, September and October.
Movieguide® previously reported on the success of SOUND OF FREEDOM:
Since the movie’s debut July 4, SOUND OF FREEDOM has made history.
The movie has grossed more than $100 million in the box office in less than three weeks.
The head of theatrical distribution for Angel Studios, Brandon Purdie, said in a press release, “There have only been 10 wide-release movies in box office history that have had a second-weekend increase greater than 35% over their opening weekend. All of them achieved this milestone during Christmas. Angel Studios is the only studio to accomplish this feat during the summer blockbuster season with ‘Sound of Freedom.’”
A portion of the Movieguide® review reads:
SOUND OF FREEDOM is gripping and heartbreaking, but hope-giving. The movie sheds light on the need for strong people to stand up for God’s children around the world who are caught in the vicious, abusive system of sex trafficking. SOUND OF FREEDOM has a strong Christian, moral worldview that promotes sacrifice and the message that “God’s children are not for sale.” MOVIEGUIDE® advises strong and extreme caution for the movie’s mature subject matter, implied and depicted violence, and abuse of children.
