Earlier this year, Dinosaur Jr’s J Mascis made a list of 10 albums that changed his life, and now he’s made another list: 10 guitarists who shaped his sound. He made the list for Guitar World, along with commentary on each pick and an interview about his own playing. The list is as follows:
1. Greg Sage (Wipers)
2. Keith Richards/Mick Taylor (The Rolling Stones)
3. Ron Asheton (The Stooges)
4. Anthony ‘Bones’ Roberts (Discharge)
5. Bob Mould (Hüsker Dü, Sugar)
6. Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath)
7. Paul Kossoff (Free)
8. Bob Dylan
9. Jimi Hendrix
10. Rory Gallagher
“I still remember the first time I saw him play,” he said of Bob Mould. “He was so loud and completely overtook the room.” J also specifically shouted out Bob’s pre-Sugar 1990 solo album Black Sheets of Rain and added, “His guitar sound is one where it just feels like the guitar is everywhere in the room.”
J also calls Bob Dylan “underrated as a player” and Hendrix “the best guitarist ever,” and he said Ron Asheton had “the most amazing guitar sound I’ve heard,” adding, “I tried to find it myself, but to date, I’ve never gotten there.” Read the rest here.
Back in 2011, J made a list for The Guardian of newer/current guitarists he loves, including Kurt Vile, Screaming Females’ Marissa Paternoster, Graham Clise (Annihilation Time, Lecherous Gaze, Witch), Rick Tomlinson, Magik Markers’ Elisa Ambrogio, and Turn To Crime’s Derek Stanton.
Dinosaur Jr are also gearing up for Where You Been 30th anniversary shows in London (November 12-15 at The Garage) and Brooklyn (Music Hall of Williamsburg on December 1-3 & 5-8). Much sooner than that, they’ll bring their ongoing tour to Asbury Park’s Stone Pony on September 13 with Luluc. All dates and openers for the current tour below.
